Bordered with ramparts, the historic centre of Autun is home to a rich architectural heritage. In the heart of the old town, the Saint-Lazare cathedral, surmounted by a Gothic spire, has a remarkable Romanesque tympanum depicting the Last Judgment. Around the cathedral, the visit continues with the discovery of the medieval alleyways; the Rolin museum which exhibits collections of archaeological objects, sculptures and paintings; and of the Natural History museum. The city of Art and History of Autun is also home to remarkable ancient remains, such as the Roman theatre, the biggest theatre of the Gallic Empire; the Saint-André gateway; the Arroux gateway; the Janus temple; the Gallo-Roman remains.
