It was in Compiègne Forest, near the village of Rethondes, that the Armistice was signed on 11 November 1918 , bringing the First World War to an end. Illustrating this event are a statue of Marshal Foch, commemorative monuments and a museum containing the railway carriage in which the Armistice was signed.
