AmiensAmiensGuide of the SommeGuide of the SommeTravel Guide > France > Picardy > Somme > AmiensCapital of Picardy and city of Art and history, Amiens possesses a gem of Gothic art : the Notre-Dame cathedral. UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cathedral of Amiens is, with its 145 metres in lengths and its 42 metres in heights, the biggest cathedral in France! Moreover, it has a great homogeneity, which can be explained by the fact that it was built within one century. Its magnificent facade and the richly decorated portal arouse admiration … An exceptional statuary! Inside, the 110 oak stalls in the choir are also remarkable. The colorisation of the portal of the cathedral, which takes place every evening in the summer and in December, is a show not to be missed. This is a moment when the spectator can admire the original colours, which used to decorate the facade of the Notre-Dame cathedral in the Middle Age. Not far from the cathedral is the Saint-Leu medieval district named "Northern small Venice". This former tanners, weavers and dry cleaners district is really charming with its small colourful houses sitting along the canals. Of the Dodane bridge, walkers can benefit from a beautiful view of the cathedral. The numerous restaurant and cafe terraces, pleasantly situated along the water, incite to relaxation. All around the cathedral, the shopping streets and the monuments, such as the lodge of the King, the Sagittaire house, the Bailliage house and the belfry (bell tower), complete the visit of the historic centre before starting to discover the museums of the city. The Picardy museum brings together collections of archaeology, sacred art, painting and sculpture. The Berny town house museum exhibits artwork and ancient furniture. Jules Verne's house, open to visitors, is home to recollections, objects and documents of the famous writer who has lived there for 18 years.
