An abundance of bastides (fortified towns and villages) were built in the Midi-Pyrénées region in the 13th century. These so-called "new towns" of the Middle Ages stand out for their grid layout around a central square or covered market. In the Tarn, Cordes-sur-Ciel, Castelnau-de-Montmiral, Puycelci and Lisle-sur-Tarn provide typical examples of this architecture.
