TOWN PRESENTATION
  • The city of Yvetot, capital of the Pays de Caux, has a major advantage of its geographical location: 35 km from Rouen, Le Havre 50 km, 30 km from the coast and 12 km of the Valley of the Seine.
  • For centuries, the Pays de Caux is a region of agricultural production and livestock, and Yvetot has always been an important venue for fairs and markets. Every Wednesday and Saturday mornings, the market for producers, traders and craftsmen in the area, to the streets and the square downtown.
  • History:
  • The origins of the city would Yvetot originally the name of a Scandinavian chef come to Yvetofta, Yvar, which is associated with the suffix "topt" which means "field" or "earth." A new era opened for Yvetot which became the seat of a sub-prefecture from 1800 to 1926.

  • Fire and War: Throughout its history, Yvetot experienced many fires that altered its appearance. The first broke out in 1680, causing huge losses. In 1688, the town was again consumed by a fire that reached all the houses made of wood and thatch. During seven hours burned the convent, the rectory, the five halls, public buildings and more than 200 homes. The latest took place during the Second World War: June 10, 1940, the 25th Panzer Regiment commanded by Rommel arrived in Yvetot, deserted by its inhabitants. The next day, the Nazis systematically burned the entire city center. Hundreds of homes burned more than 1,000 homeless and destroyed two hectares of land. The Yvetot had to undergo 50 months of occupation in uncomfortable conditions. The city was liberated on 1 September 1944 and has also celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of the liberation in 2004.
  • From Reconstruction to the present: After the difficult period of reconstruction, a new urbanism to create a modern face Yvetot center, built in stone and tile roof, served by streets, squares and avenues airy, where It is good to walk along the many windows shopping.
