A bit of history?
In 1974, the merger was made between common and Wangenbourg Engenthal the form of common associates. The new common outcome of this association is called when: Common Wangenbourg-Engenthal.
It actually includes 7 villages with evocative names: Schneethal (Val des Neiges), Wolfsthal (Val des Loups), Engenthal (Val Tight) Freudeneck (Corner of Joy), Obersteigen (Top of the mountain), Windsbourg ( Village of the Wind) and Wangenbourg (the "Burg" or Castle of Wangen). Finally, let us not forget the farms of Schneeberg.
The town is one of the oldest resorts ranked in Alsace (1929). Since 1997 she has enriched the name? Station Green Holiday?. Early in the century, the station Wangenbourg was greatly appreciated for its appearance climate. Micro-mountain climate, clean air, protected from westerly winds, it has attracted many spa guests from fresh air and admire the wonderful landscapes.
The scattered settlements across small valleys and plateaus form a bucolic Alpine and has earned the region the nickname of? Suisse d'Alsace?.
Wangenbourg-Engenthal, located on the eastern slope of the largest forest in the Vosges, currently has 1361 inhabitants and about 300 second homes. The municipality covers a total area of 3075 hectares, 2476 hectares of forest (over 80%), mainly state-owned. The altitude varies between 400 and 961 meters, which is the Schneeberg (Snow Mountain), the highest point of the town. Wangenbourg-Engenthal is crisscrossed by 300 km of hiking trails, 120 km of mountain bike trails, 75 km of Nordic skiing. Its main activities are tourism, wood industry and handicrafts.
The history of the village would be incomplete if we did not quote one of the most significant events that took place at the time of the "phony war" during the years 1939/1940. Wangenbourg-Engenthal was the headquarters of the 5th Army commanded by General Bourret, and was requisitioned to house the makeshift headquarters. The village was invaded by a swarm of military and civilian figures, including President of the Republic Albert Lebrun, the Duke of Windsor, Blum and others. But the most famous person who stayed there from September 1939 to May 1940, was General de Gaulle. That's what Wangenbourg-Engenthal Charles de Gaulle left for England where he launched his famous call of June 18! Some bunkers and wooden huts bear witness to this effervescent period.
