TOWN PRESENTATION
  • History:
  • This is one of the first inhabitants of Germanic origin which gave the village its name: Waha or wahan and suffix "panies" which means firm, farm, plowed land. We're on the ground Waha. The rural community lives on a few crops, livestock and logging (hence the origin of the giant John Badoulet, created by children from kindergarten June 24, 1989). Toddlers married at the Celine Dumoulin (2nd Wahagnies giant, created August 18, 1991. They had two children together (Peter and Isabella). This is the name of John Badoulet who is behind the newsletter City "the country Badoulet" in January 2005.
  • In 1108, the cartulary of Notre-Dame Bourbourg reveals the existence of the common Wingni we find Wahangiis named in 1135 the cartulary chapter of Arras.
  • First Wahagnies were lords of the lords of Enghien. In 1418, Jacques d'Enghien sells the land to Wahagnies Lady Catherine de Saint-Aubin, mother of Hugues de Lannoy, who becomes the lord.
  • In 1620 the manor was sold to the house of Merode, lord of Oignies.
  • In 1773, the union between the house and the de Merode Aremberg gathered again lands Wahagnies and Enghien until the revolution.
  • The crest Wahagnies:
  • Until the early 20th century, the village had no official coat of arms, as could have in the larger cities. This is the canon Leuridan Theodore in 1904, which would be the coat of arms for the castellany Lille and the coat of arms of municipalities in the north in 1909. It was therefore allocated to each municipality Arms. For this, the choice was to rebuild canon Leuridan for each village, the movement or feudal noble family who held the longer these lordships, or those who have illustrated in some way.
  • Leuridan chooses the arms of the lords of Enghien, who were the first lords of Wahagnies until the early 15th century: Jacques d'Enghien sold the manor in 1418. Moreover, heraldry and coats of arms of other families are adopted and used by other municipalities.
  • Leuridan thus defines the arms of Wahagnies "gironné silver and sand, sand in charge of cross crosslet (sic) of gold. It was however some uncertainty about the number of treads and the shape of cross connections.
  • Bruno Labbé-Smith, genealogist and historian, former head of Wahagnies, discovered much later that gironné far the most used by the lords of Enghien was 10 runs not on the one hand, and that on the other hand, were primitive croslets quickly become cross crosslet foot stuck. Bruno Labbé-Dupont communicate its observations to the mayor, curator of the departmental archives of the north and the national commission of Heraldic Ministry of Culture in Paris. Once this shield accepted by the committee, as was the case in 1990, it remained to be finally adopted by the council's decision "a silver shield gironné and sand in ten parts, each part sand loaded with a small cross crosslet fitchy gold shield with no stamp support, or taking or outdoor furniture. Finally, the ultimate step was the choice of Mayor Jean-Marie Ruant to regain the shield as an emblem of the town. It was redesigned in the pediment of the town hall by Jean-Claude Viseux. By this decision, he wished to highlight the history of the town and the research efforts made by various historians.
