TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Its location:
  • The village of Visan is located in the Enclave des Papes, Vaucluse administrative territory wedged in the Drome, he is one of the four municipalities.
  • Located 276 meters above sea level and rising to 367 meters (quarter Lautaret), it is backed by a beautiful natural amphitheater of colorful hills. It currently covers 4107 hectares and is one of 16 municipalities to have the right to attach its name to the AOC Côtes du Rhône Village.
  • History:
  • Visan boasts a rich and ancient heritage and history which traces are still strongly present in his face and his heritage.
  • The first traces of this history back to the Paleolithic period, but especially just before the Christian era, around 70 BC during the reign of Augustus, a part of the second legion came there and set and mark the real beginnings of the history of the village. Visan Avisanum then called and was on the Roman road connecting to Vaison Valréas.

  • Religious Architecture:
  • Notre-Dame des Vignes: listed building, a chapel was laid in a vineyard setting at the mouth of a valley sheltered from the fury of the mistral. A very famous pilgrimage takes place Sept. 8 at the scene. One can admire his heart which has one of the most beautiful gilded wood in the south of France. Mass is given in the open, under the foliage of large trees that shelter the participants open every day except Monday from 10 am to 11:30 and from 15h to 17h from May to October.
  • Parish Church: Under the patronage of St. Martin, offers a composite architecture in which we note in particular the 15th portal equipped with walnut doors placed in 1637, and a bell tower of the late fifteenth. Three altars dating from the 17th and 18th centuries were accompanied by a fine collection of sculptures and paintings, including a historical monument Nicolas Mignard.   • Civil Architecture:
  • From the mansions from the Renaissance to the late 18th century adorn the old town, especially in the Rue des Nobles, the Congregation of the street, and around the site of the parish church.
  • Over the centuries, the village has covered its homes, organized around two walls of speakers, the hill that emerges over the roof and door of the castle ruins Dauphin.
