The ancient land of the abbey of Saint-Benoit-sur-Loire.
Nestled deep in the valley Ouanne, surrounded by forests on the border of the Yonne and Gâtinais Villiers-Saint-Benoît, charming village, with here and there with elegant houses typical brick-framed and covered with tiles Burgundy .
Serenity and calm are punctuated by the rustling of the waters: the river is lounging and the many sources that feed drinking and washing.
In the 10th century, Villiers belonged to a knight named Angelême. He fell ill at Paris in 975, he gave his estate to the abbey of St. Benoit-sur-Loire.
Villiers took the name of and belonged to the Villiers-Saint-Benoît Revolution to the abbey of Saint-Benoit-sur-Loire.
The monks fortified village in the 11th and 12th centuries and built a mansion in the 15th century, called Chateau Fort.
This church, built in the 13th century on the site of a chapel of Xe has been reworked to fifteenth. It has murals including a Dit Three Dead and Three Loud, ranked among the finest Puisaye.
By borrowing streets with evocative names: Rue des Fosses St Great Uses Des Ovens Bans??, One can trace the ancient history with its customs and also with his renowned figures: Augustine Boyer, an associate of Pierre Larousse, Paul Huillard behind the Museum.
The Villotte (common associated). The Villotte was a manor that fell in fee of the County of Joigny and fief of the bishopric of Auxerre. Now this little village is a common associated Villiers-Saint-Benoît.
Its church, dedicated to Saint Loup was rebuilt in the 16th century, certainly from a construction twelfth. It seems a little unbalanced with its single aisle. But its portal surmounted by an ogee arch, vaults, barrel vaults in the nave, with ribs in the collateral, its closing chorus dated 1703, the canvas altarpiece, make it an interesting building. Finally, its tombstones evoke the stately and burial of "Margaret Hill, the former mistress of the forge of Breau," recalls the great center of iron mining that once made the town an active Villotte.
