Green Holiday Resort, Royal bastide, Villeréal is a chief town of the district comprising 13 municipalities. It is located entirely in the northern department of Lot-et-Garonne, at the edge of the Dordogne. Its population is 1317 people and 3493 throughout the township. In this region of green hills of Upper Agen, Villeréal is located in the rich valley Dropt river whose sides are lined with many houses: British on the right bank such as Beaumont or Monpazier, French on the left bank as Castillonnès or Villeréal .
Quality of life, friendliness and traditions characterize Country Villereal. The landscape has certainly changed over the decades but the nature has kept this privileged Upper Perigord Agen. The economics of the region reflect a diversity and richness of the countryside. Hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking, swimming and fishing await you? You can enjoy passing on local produce and cuisine, the smell of its land, its beautiful sites and monuments.
It was in 1265 that Gaston Gontaud-Biron was forced to concede to Count Alphonse de Poitiers (brother of St. Louis) land located in the forest Montlabour which would be built in just 4 years, the new bastide Villeréal, whose jurisdictional boundaries were established by letters patent as early as March 1269. Its regular plan meets all the country houses, eight main streets intersect it at right angles in the center surrounded by angle a large square which was later established (14th century) a hall of vast proportions which was endowed extremely rare, one-story mud. The church, a slight break with the rigid frame of the town, fortress, date it the 13th century. Both buildings are now classified.
Thus, created by the will of a prince of royal blood, the bastide Villeréal was born and his image will forever? Azure three towers or put two and a ??... and if Villeréal never had fortifications, dug it all around, huge ditches called? moat? which, broadly-speaking, occupied the site of the outer boulevards today they were loaded in the 18th century but the existence of these moats, wide seven meters, made up Villeréal a strong despite the absence of walls.
- Listed Historic Monument.
- Built (quite rare) at the same time as the country house, between 1265 and 1269. Its size, its buttresses are a veritable fortress, its two square towers connected by a crenellated parapet. She met two vocations: Place of Worship and ultimate refuge. She was surrounded by a deep ditch, and to enter it had to cross a drawbridge. The tympanum presents sculptures unfortunately damaged during the wars of religion (Catholic / Protestant). One of the towers, the left, contains a spiral staircase lit by loopholes and other features in the top two chambers. One of them once served in prison while the other are the mechanisms of the clock is a beautifully crafted and have just been repaired. The two "windows" of the eardrum are believed to be the only evidence of the drawbridge.
- Within it, the church contains some fine specimens of carved wooden saints on either side of the choir. On each side, four chapels are housed in the axils of braces. The vault was damaged several times during the religious wars and has been restored and enhanced as a result she is no time like the chorus. The vaults of the side chapels are they, and therefore the original 13th century.
- You should also remember that the church communicated with a strong appeal several times and then completely demolished in 1794 (two hundred years ago) and it was never rebuilt and that there remains no trace except the fact of that he was home at the very beginning, the bailiff in charge of administering the country house.
- Historic monument, it rests on pillars of oak trees that were found on site then squared and soaked for about thirty years in the river nearby Dropt, 150 m from the old moat ... This largely explains the fact that it was erected a little later than the bastide.
- Its dimensions are substantial: a square of 30 m side, a magnificent and imposing structure and, rare thing, a stage which at the time was used by the most senior direct representatives of the kingdom which then served as mayor of bailiwick and jurade.
- The pillars, originally based on the land Batu. Over time, as and when the deterioration of their base, they were placed on stones and this operation lasted very long because the last to be consolidated and there were the few. As for the tile is also very recent.
- This is where it all villeréal 60 to 65 has seen his early films. Indeed, a professional movie buff streaked across the department and planned the first silent films of Charlie Chaplin. A Villeréal its passage was announced by the usher at each corner (drum roll and advice to the population). A large screen was set up under the market, against the wall of the staircase in general, and the spectators (who brought their chairs) settled down with his back to the modern coffee.
