Villeneuve-Minervois is situated in a dale, laughing at the entrance of the valley Clamoux at the foot of the Montagne Noire at the beginning of the Minervois plain.

The origin of Villeneuve is located after the end of the Albigensian Crusade, when the canons of Saint-Nazaire Chapter received the gift of property confiscated from heretics located in the soil of the small village of Saint-Etienne Clamouse. They went to build a powerful fortress, watchful sentinel guarding the entrance to the valley Clamoux. Houses built against the castle formed gradually a small village, which was surrounded by a wall and protected by wide and deep ditches. The original enclosure was enlarged, probably in the 13th century to include the New Town. Hence the first name of the village: Villeneuve-les-Canons.

Since 1750, Villeneuve is a village vigneron whose wines are now ranked among the best wines of Minervois. In recent years the activity around the black truffle (tuber melanosporum) is taking off and is the subject of several markets in winter whose reputation continues to expand ...
