TOWN PRESENTATION
  • The common Villeneuve-de-Rivière is located in the south west of the Haute-Garonne, about 10 kilometers of the Hautes-Pyrenees. It is at a distance of 4 kilometers from the capital of canton and sub-prefecture of Haute-Garonne, Saint-Gaudens, and 95 kilometers from Toulouse.
  • Origin of name: Bastide founded in the 13th century in the plain of River.
  • History:
  • A Gallo-Roman existed east of the present village. La Bastide de Villeneuve, founded in the 13th century, obtained a charter of the Count of Foix, Roger Bernard in 1285.
  • In 1333, Gaston de Foix gives Arnaud Villeneuve of Spain-Montespan.
  • The powerful family takes full advantage of its many lordships: for Villeneuve, two common mills and a toll road along the Garonne. Like other neighboring country houses, Villeneuve grew rapidly in the late Middle Ages.
  • In 1761, the granddaughter of the Marquis de Montespan sells the manor to John Estremé merchant who followed her son Michael, is faster in the joint trial which requires excessive manorial rights.
  • From 17th to late 19th century, many cottage industries to supplement low incomes of the earth and animate the village.
  • In 1886, the population of Villeneuve in 1312 instead of 1870 in 1852. This decrease is explained by the wool industry is regularly struck by crises, hence the drain Villeneuvois to cities to work in government (La Poste, EDF, SNCF, etc..) And emigration America in the hope of making a fortune.
  • In the 20th century, Villeneuve became a residential suburb of Saint-Gaudens: two thirds of school children from families of farmers in 1987, only 3%. But thanks to this "urban exodus" Villeneuve population is increasing steadily since 1954.
  • Among the famous Villeneuvois:
  • Arrieu Anselm (1884-1944) is one of the great figures of the town through its involvement in resistance in Saint-Gaudens in the Second World War.
  • Raoul Castex, military theorist.
  • Doctor Seilhan, who scored through its advocacy, dedication and great generosity, life Villeneuvois.

SIGHTSEEING
  • Tour Romane 15th century:
  • There is a wall of irregular blocks of limestone, an octagonal bell tower with its spiral staircase, and the foothills to drip, what is, in the 15th century parish church of Villeneuve.
  • Length of 27 meters, it was built on a rocky outcrop and supported on the grounds of the castle from the 13th century. The Huguenots of Montgomery attempt to set fire in 1569. Its ruins are used to support a clock and a large statue of the Virgin, blessed in 1882.
  • Church of Our Lady of the Assumption:
  • In the mid 19th century the old church, too small and threatening ruin, is abandoned and replaced in the lower part of Villeneuve, this neo-Romanesque church of three naves.
  • The 12 pillars of stone are visible from the repair work from 1981 to 1984.
  • In addition to the various decorative elements of the 19th century, the church has a wooden Christ restored the 12th century, a bottom altarpiece of the church of the 15th century, a wrought iron gate from the 18th century abbey de Bonnefont.
  • In 2002, a renovation operation of the windows was made to allow the church to rediscover its light of yesteryear. In June 2003, a major operation development has a special illumination of the church.
  • Hostellerie des Cedres:
  • The former mansion of Montespan.
  • In 1333, Count Gaston de Foix 2nd gave the lordship Arnaud de Villeneuve at the Spanish-Montespan.
