The name of Villechenève meets the Middle Ages in the forms Vieillicheneva, Old Chenevez and would Vetula of cannabis (hemp Canabis means). In the 12th century, land was Villechenève Forez. It was then the capital of marquisate River whose jurisdiction extended over the parishes of Longessaigne, Panissières and Saint-Martin-Lestra. Earth River belonged to the late 17th century to the family and Rivirie marquisate was erected in 1719, she became the property of Jean-Baptiste de Michel Charpin, Count Feugerolles in 1777, his heirs still possessed on the eve Revolution.

• The Chateau de la Riviere

• Originally, the river was a fortified house. The castle was built by Bartholomew of Riverie in 1650 on the site of the fortified house. It consisted of a large covered pavilion and accompanied by two buildings on the right and left, all separated by three courses, all ending in a large garden in front of the pavilion and chapel.

• Dedicated in 1878, the church underwent a major restoration in 1986.

• The Heritage Museum, "House of Milotte"

• The idea of a heritage museum was conceived in 2003 and, from the collection work done by the Heritage Committee, the museum was opened in October 2006.
