TOWN PRESENTATION

Chief town of the valley cities, the town of about 1800 inhabitants is a preferred destination of central Alsace. Located near major tourist attractions of Alsace (15 km from the Wine Route, 19 km from the Haut-Koenigsbourg), you will love 100% natural part of this valley and its chief town.

The city name is derived from "Villar", which means a rural area in the Frankish period. His name will evolve in various forms over the centuries: "Wilre", "Wihr", "Villiers", "Weiler" ... Alsatian dialect, the town is called "Will".

Historically, the geographical location of town has made to the junction of the front-valley, large and airy, and the two valleys that lead to upper neck Steige (to the Upper Valley Bruche) and Urbeis (basinward Die St), between two rivers (the Steige of Giessen and that of Urbeis). The town, once fortified, so controlled crossings between the plain of Alsace and Lorraine.

Located at the crossroads of the ancient Salt Road and Railway St Die, the town and control access to their upper valleys and mountain passes. This strategic location has undoubtedly conferred Villé an important role since the Middle Ages.

It is not known if the nickname is due to their greed, or poverty of their diet, which condemned them to lick the bottoms of bowls.
