TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Located at the intersection of NR 19 and NR 57, the SNCF Paris-Basel Vesoul is an ideal place to discover the Haute-Saone.
  • Like all cities that have a long history, has a center Vesoul old: houses and mansions from the 15th to 18th century church of Saint-Georges, Georges Garret Museum (Fine Arts and Archeology). Take time to wander the streets, in shops, dreaming on the terraces of cafes, stroll the English Garden where thousands of flowers welcome you: You rediscover a Vesoul that you might not, who will surprise and seduce you.
  • History:
  • From the early Middle Ages, the mound of the motte is crowned by a castle of great strategic importance. On the lower slopes that will snag the first houses that give birth to the town, while the vine covered slopes well exposed. At the site of the castle was razed in 1595, was erected in the 18th century a large cross covered with plates of metal that glittered in the sun and was protecting the vineyards (wine Motte was very popular with the Dukes of Burgundy). The Revolution would replace an obelisk to the glory of freedom. It was never realized. To thank the Virgin for protecting the city from the cholera epidemic of 1854, the Vésulienne built the present chapel consecrated in 1857 at the sun.
  • The Middle Ages: Shortly after the construction of the castle, the "castrum vesulium" City Vesoul moved gradually to the foot of the hill of La Motte, protected from frequent flooding of the plain. From the 13th century, Vesoul surrounded by ramparts. The city is still known for its fairs and its business, wine and judicial.
  • The Renaissance: After the destruction of the city at the end of the 15th century, known Vesoul century following a period of prosperity. Administrative Center, craft, commercial and legal, it is also one of the most important wine towns of the region. The city was rebuilt around the church Saint-Georges, and beautiful houses are built on a medieval model yet, that of the rectangular house flanked by a turret staircase. They are adorned with fine decorations borrowed from the Gothic vocabulary. Twists, braces, shields are carved all the charm of this architecture.
  • The Age of Enlightenment in the eighteenth, Haute-Saone is experiencing a period of strong economic and demographic development. The villages rebuild their churches and public buildings. Vesoul at that time, saw the greatest expansion in its history. The population quadrupled and the city takes on a new face. The rich bourgeois modernizing the old family homes or building new mansions, with elegant facades symmetrical. To enable the city to breathe, widen streets, fountains are built and seats are arranged. Two main buildings of the city were built: the church of Saint-Georges, richly decorated with sculptures and wood rubble, and the Palace of Justice (1765-1771). With over 40 lawyers, Vesoul is then a very important judicial center. The city is also expanding outside the ancient walls and suburbs are emerging.
  • The 19th century The 19th century saw Vesoul enter the industrial era. After almost total destruction of vineyards by phylloxera, activities evolve. By mid-century, railroads put the city at the center of a major city rail network, of national and local levels. Industries installed around the city center. The suburbs are growing, surrounding an historic center that will always be preserved. Vesoul then a quiet commercial and administrative city, home to the 11th Regiment of Rifles. It then asserts its tranquility and quality of life. From 1900, beautiful houses are built near the city center, adopting the styles in vogue at the time, Modern Style, Art Nouveau, Art Deco (Caisse d'Epargne, streets and Dr Gerome-Doillon).
  • Architecture Vésulienne: Limestone is the main material used for construction Vésulienne. A blue and beige limestone lives with a ferruginous limestone, with shades redder. These stones are used to build houses sober, solid, yet elegant. After being destroyed several times before the 16th century, has always preferred Vesoul solidity to the imagination. Witness the Latin motto inscribed on a porch "during Moderata," which is moderately hard. Wood is also very present in buildings, often in backyards. From the 17th century mullioned windows give way to large windows, offering more interior light. These houses are protected by roofs often very steep, sometimes adorned with glazed tiles.
  • La Motte: It marks a masterly landscape Vésulienne. Formerly part of the limestone plateau east of the city, the hill of La Motte (380 m) was separated during the geological upheavals (Quaternary) that allowed water to seep through the cracks, to breach that engulfed the Durgeon. Over the millennia, the patient work of whitewater isolated hill Motte, monadnock copy of the ancient terrain overlooking the open landscape of the valley Durgeon. Several rivers bask in the plain, in an intricate meanders, ready to flood the country in case of prolonged heavy rain. Historically, the Vésulienne tried to control the water. Some street names (tanners, Ilott) remind us that patient struggle.

SIGHTSEEING
  • In the heart of old Vesoul, the Saint-Georges:
  • Built on the site of an old chapel which dates back to the 11th century, the Church of St. George is a very interesting example of religious architecture of early 18th century in Haute-Saone. On the model of the church hall in vogue at that time, the interior vaults are all located at the same height.
  • If outside the church struck by its originality, the interior is remarkable for its decoration of the apse, decorated with beautiful woodwork rock meets the 3 336 pipes of the great organ, one of the most powerful of the region.
  • Over the chapels, eras meet and reveal: medieval piety, Entombment Renaissance, Baroque Glory and Saint Sebastian Gustave Courtois. Color schemes on the stone and wood, lighting from the windows, games resonances between organs?
  • The interior of the church Saint-Georges was completely renovated in 2008.
  • Place du Palais de Justice:
  • This is where the hall was situated market Vesoul. Destroyed in the late 18th century to create a place, it was replaced by the current courthouse. The construction of the latter was the starting point for the creation of an architectural ensemble consisting of the Palais de Justice, Pétremand hotel, located on his right, and Saliva Hotel St. Paul-Petitclerc.
  • Clean and symmetrical shapes, elegant facades are the main characteristics of this remarkable collection. The obelisk fountain, built in 2003, fits perfectly into this place.
  • La Motte:
  • Downtown - Signs along the walk.
  • La Motte hill overlooking the plain of Durgeon (378 m). From the late 10th century castle stands on the narrow platform. Tremblecourt troops razed in the 1595 and disembowel the walls. Later, a large wooden cross covered with metal sheets that gleamed in the sun is drawn at the top to protect the vineyards from lightning. A chapel, Notre-Dame de la Motte, was erected in 1857 in gratitude to the Virgin for having saved the city from cholera in 1854. Destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt in 1967.

  • At the first level, the archaeological remains found locally suggest occupation of territory through the centuries. Among the objects on display - finds old or recent excavations - we note especially the flint tools and prehistoric fauna, the headstones Gallo-Roman villa and Chassey les Montbozon, weapons, pottery and jewelry from the Merovingian cemeteries.
  • At the second level, about 600 m² are dedicated to collections Fine Arts whose strong point is the art of the second half of the 19th century.
