TOWN PRESENTATION

13 km east of Charny - 11 km northeast of Verdun.

Special feature: Vaux-devant-Damloup is the only 9 villages destroyed rebuilt.

Vaux-devant-Damloup is a village destroyed by since, being at the limit of the "red zone" has been rebuilt, over time, a new village, just near the old destroyed village which has the same characteristics as his eight companions in misfortune.

Belonging to the Chapter of Verdun before the Revolution, it has always been a thriving village in its history.

The presence of nearby Fort de Vaux was still somewhat upset the course of the history of the village. Indeed, since its construction from 1881 to 1884, the village has been widely applied to participate in the accommodation of many workers relaying it, just as in the important work of building began on the Fort from 1888 to 1912.

In 1915, the decision of the General Staff, in part to disarm all the Forts, transfers the defensive effort especially in the villages. So that of Vaux, placed north of the Fort and in contact with the plain Woëvre, naturally becomes an important point in the defense system of the entrenched camp of Verdun.

When the great German offensive, launched in late February 1916, he was one of the major objectives of the Germans after the fall of Douaumont, fell on March 2, and before that of the Fort de Vaux.

After bitter fighting within its walls, the village fell into German hands March 31, 1916.

The bombing of French succession in April when the German bombing in March, only accentuated the outright destruction of the village.

After the fall of the village, the 50th German Division is quick to try to seize the Fort de Vaux which heroic resistance of 2 to 7 June 1916 under the command of Commandant Raynal. This tragic episode is a feat of arms forever famous as the garrison, short of drinking water and fighting in the galleries of the Fort for days, finally surrendered to the Germans who, admiring the bravery of the survivors hairy , decided to give them military honors as they exit the Fort.

In 1918, the village of Vaux-devant-Damloup is found within the boundaries of the famous "red zone" prohibiting reconstruction.

In 1919, he is also part of the list of destroyed villages and during the interwar period, there was built a memorial chapel and the homeless Saint Philippe and Saint-Jacques, like the other eight villages destroyed.

However, its position on the edge of the area and the presence of the railway company's railway in the East, who obtained permission to house his ten service agents at the site of Vaux-devant-Damloup allows the Village to recover, over the years and the interwar period, a new life, now very active, forward looking, including the Internet, without denying the tragic past of the old village destroyed, his ever-present door and to the memory of its 70 inhabitants.
