Varaignes is at the crossroads of three departments. This town north of the Périgord Vert, affecting virtually the Charente to the west and north, a distance of 15-20 km, Limousin.

Varaignes kept the medieval village ordered structure around the castle.In 1451, the Manor of Varaignes pass Montbron Francois Gautier de Pérusse des Cars Lord of the Vauguyon, the Coussière of Roussines, Tower Bar, Den and the Barony of St Germain sur Vienne . Lords of Varaignes possessed the right of the Upper, Middle and Lower justice in the parishes of Soudat, Bussiere, Bearberry, St. Robert's Chapel in the Dordogne and of Souffrignac, Emouthiers-Ferrier, Stables, Roussines Montbron and enclaves in the Charente.
The advantage of this castle is that it can embrace the evolution of the local architecture from the 13th to the 16th century for military medieval architecture of 13th century square keep, Gothic architecture of the 15th century hexagonal tower facade and the courtyard of the 16th Italian Renaissance. The present castle was the heart of a defensive enclosure whose last turn in the location of the current post, was destroyed in 1920.
Castle communal Varaignes is included in the inventory of buildings in France. It was restored through the efforts of the Tourist Information and Cultural Animation Foster Varaignes who received the first prize in the National Antenne 2 "Masterpiece in Peril" hands on 16.12.1981 Minister of Culture.
