Purchased by Pope John 22nd when they resided in Avignon, the Comtat territory became Valréas Venaissin. In connection with the Republic of Comtat, Valréas decided to remain connected to Avignon, while some neighboring municipalities chose to become Drômoises, isolating Valréas and three other municipalities in the rest of the Vaucluse (Grillon, Richerenches and Visan).
Today Valréas is located in the Enclave des Papes, a district entirely surrounded by the Drôme (north of Vaucluse)!
