Unieux owes its development to implementation, in the 19th century by Jacob Holtzer, a factory manufacturing steel of very high quality.
Now converted to the crisis of the single industry in diversified activities, Unieux exploits all the qualities of its exceptional natural environment.
At the gates of the gorges of the Loire, on the edge of the water Grangent, with its bold Bicentennial Bridge, benefiting from the presence of a Nature Reserve Volunteer of 330 hectares, it offers its residents a unique quality of life.
The renovation of the hamlet of Echandi, the mill of the Fenderie and various ongoing projects allow development activities related to tourism and recreation nearby.

- The mill of the Fenderie:
- Near the Bridge Pertuiset announcing the Gorges de la Loire, dominated by granite hills of the valley, stands the mill of the slitting, powered by a reach once brought water collected upstream from the Ondaine.
- A special situation: the site of the Fenderie Unieux owes this name to the metallurgical facility established in the mid 17th century to produce iron rods manufacturers of nails. - Chambles "medieval village":
- The bright Chambles village, its granite promontory, overlooking the Gorges de la Loire.
- Origins: recently on Essalois whose occupation dates back to Neolithic times. In 1040, St. Robert, Abbot of Chaise-Dieu, founded a priory Chambles. In the 12th century, the priory dependent on that of Saint Rambert and is part of the properties of Ile Barbe.
- Tower Chambles: Former dungeon, of unknown origin, the structure is reminiscent of the Tower Grangent. The proportions of this particular construction arouse curiosity height of 18 meters, 18 meters in circumference and 1.4 meter thick walls. It characterizes the traditional feudal system of defense. Listed as historic monuments in 1949. From the top of the tower, the view is remarkable Forez, Pilat and the Loire.
- The Church: The church is under the patronage of Saint Peter. The Romanesque apse is the oldest part.
- Essalois: "A high place in Celtic Forez"
- Essalois Castle stands on a site that is a strategic naturally fortified and inhabited by men since time immemorial. Documents written by the most distant reference to the castle are from the 14th century. Le Puy Essalois is mentioned in charters from 1337. In 1378, Arthaud Villedieu pays tribute to the Count of Drill "for the house and tower Essalois who watched the Loire. The Joint Development of the Gorges of the Loire, which includes seven municipalities along the Lake Grangent, and the department of the Loire, acquires Castle Essalois in 1976. The restoration has been ongoing since 1983 and the whole castle look great and is by its size and position one of the scenic highlights of the Gorges de la Loire. It symbolizes the action of SMAGL.
- The dam Grangent: "A landscape reshaped"
- Dam Grangent, which marks the border between the gorges of the Loire and the plain Forez is causing the landscape spread before you.
