TOWN PRESENTATION

This small town in the Val d'Arnoult, whose economy has long depended almost exclusively of market gardening and quarrying of stone, is now turned to tourism activities.

In addition to the remains of a Benedictine priory called "Abbey" has been awarded the Treasures of Saintonge, the town hosts the botanical garden of the "gardens of Compostela", located near the "Lac du Bois Fleuri", a water Artificial built in 1995.

The municipality of Trizay is located in west-central department of Charente-Maritime, in the old historical province of Saintonge. It occupies a site bounded by three rivers: the Arnoult, and the Arnaise Buffetizon.

The municipality has an area of 1413 hectares, is divided between marsh-dependent Arnoult, forests, and agricultural (partly devoted to mixed farming and livestock). These are located mostly in the north of the town, while a large part of the territory is devoted to gardening, traditional activity in Val d'Arnoult. This activity is explained by the presence of particularly fertile land, the "lumps" from the former estuary Arnoult, today filled by alluvium. Among the local products is high on white beans called "Mojhette" which flourishes in this land rich in humus.

On the edge of the ancient estuary is a plateau with rocks, used in quarries, have long been the wealth of the town. These are now transformed into a water artificial lake in the Bois flowers.

SIGHTSEEING

Dependent on the remote Benedictine abbey of La Chaise-Dieu in Auvergne, the Romanesque abbey of Trizay was founded in the late 11th century. For many centuries the monks led a peaceful existence, clearing the area and welcoming pilgrims en route to St Jacques de Compostela. It was occupied until the present day since the Revolution by a farm, but the municipality has managed to revive this monumental ruin, now owned by the municipality in 1989.

Lake du Bois Fleuri was inaugurated in August 1995. The vacuum left after quarrying is now the happiness of the village and visitors. By building the lake and its shoreline, by carrying out plantations, by installing play areas, by attracting a fast food restaurant and a hotel and luxury, since the spring 98, the top border of the lake, north side was converted into a landscaped garden called "gardens of Compostela" open to the public in season, the village brings to this piece of land lost a sudden attraction to delight walkers, fishermen and nature lovers.
