TOWN PRESENTATION

Located halfway between Dijon and Lyon on RN6, enjoying an interchange on the motorway A6 at 800 m from downtown, Tournus stretches on the banks of the Saône between the plain of Bresse and Mountains Macon. Its gently sloping roofs and tiled Roman herald the South of France.

Tournus former Roman castrum, is known as the 6th century, thanks to a shrine dedicated to St Valerian, martyred in the 2nd century. With the arrival of monks from Noirmoutier carrying with them the relics of their patron saint Philibert, the town became an important religious center from the 9th century. Wonderfully preserved, Abbey dominates the Burgundian city that stretches along the right bank of the Saone. Tournus became a stop for boaters that intersect along the Saône.

Abbey Church of the eleventh and twelfth centuries (nave, crypt church), medieval mosaics, cloister, abbey buildings (pantry, refectory, chapter house).

The Hotel-Dieu - Greuze Museum:

Created in the 17th century and enlarged in the 18th century, it has undergone an extensive restoration project after its closure in 1982. Having preserved its important heritage is one of the few buildings hopitaliers to have retained all its ancient rooms, furnished with their original furniture. It also houses one of the richest apothecaries still existing to this day. The entire building was declared a historic monument.
Within the Hotel Dieu, Tournus pays tribute to the most illustrious of her children, Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805), one of the most famous painters of the Enlightenment. The Greuze Museum invites you to discover the sensitivity of French art of the 18th century through paintings, drawings and prints. The Greuze Museum also presents rare archaeological collections from the Paleolithic to Merovingian times, and many sculptures and paintings from the 15th century to today.
