TOWN PRESENTATION
  • History:
  • Thionville appears for the first time in 753 in a chronicle the passage of Pepin the Short.
  • "Theodon Villa" ranks of the Carolingian kings palace and there are large political and religious meetings, especially Charlemagne stayed there six times.
  • From the 10th century, Thionville between the Germanic Empire, then became a fiefdom of the Counts of Luxembourg in the early second millennium. Henry gives the Blondel, in 1239, a charter franchise in the city. Burgundy from 1461, as part of the 17 provinces of the Netherlands, the city belongs to the house of Habsburg in 1477 before being incorporated into the Empire of Charles V on his accession in 1519. It is taken by François de Guise in 1558 but France returns the following year. Vainly besieged in 1639, Thionville capitulated to the Grand Conde in 1643 and officially became French in 1659 by the Treaty of the Pyrenees.
  • Entering the Kingdom of France is good for Thionville taking the reign of Louis XIV, an important administrative and judicial development while expanding its military role crucial. The fortress resists seats of the coalition in 1792 and the Prussian armies in 1814 and 1815.
  • The War of 1870 did not spare the city that was seriously damaged, the Treaty of Frankfurt, it is attached for almost half a century. During this period, an important urban development is carried out after the demolition of the ramparts.
  • Released November 22, 1918, Raymond Poincare gave him the Cross of the Legion of Honor in 1920. Occupied from May 1940 to November 1944, the Thionvillois undergo deportations and expulsions.
  • After the war, one that had Millerand called "The Metropolis of iron", is experiencing strong growth through the development of the steel industry.
  • Despite the economic crisis and the closure of Usinor in 1977, Thionville, served by a special communications network, seeks to highlight its unique location on the backbone of the European Community, near three countries with which historical links since ancient times.
  • City of Thionville has always been clean coat, distinct from those of any family. It was, early in the century, 12th century, the particular area of the Count of Luxembourg August 15, 1239, he was granted a charter franchise and probably at the same time, he was assigned to the arms of three rounds.
  • Today, welcoming city with flowers, Thionville offers multiple goals walk.
  • Along the Moselle Thionville offers residents the charm of a city with ancient walls. Indeed, Thionville is a former Carolingian palace. The dungeon of the Counts of Luxembourg, the tower Flea, the convent of Poor Clares, or just the facades of downtown from the 18th century??
  • The city has a variety of architecture that reflects the richness of its past. The natural beauty is probably why the thionvillois love their city. Surrounded by forests, even those that drove Charlemagne.
  • From the old city center, whose course has not changed since the Middle Ages, linked to the villages nestled around, passing by the quiet banks of the Moselle, the walker is sure to delight you.
