Ternay on the left bank of the Rhone, has spaces harmoniously blend of religion, history, nature and life.
Ternay, located at the crossroads of the Rhone valley and Giers, close to the Pilat mountains, proves to be an ideal place of residence or holiday pass. Ternay is by road, 20 minutes from Lyons, 15 minutes from Vienna, 35 mn from Saint-Etienne, all cities known for their rich cultural history and for their well being.
The town is part of network of Cluniac sites - great cultural route of the Council of Europe.
Discover Ternay through three major centers of interest:
- Interest # 1: The Priory of St. Peter and the Priory Church of Saint Mayol:
- Halfway between Lyon and Vienna, there are by far its Romanesque church, built in late 11th century by Benedictine monks of Cluny, on a rocky promontory overlooking the river??
- The Church of St. Mayol, historical monument, was built in the architectural style of buildings Benedictine its massive square tower, 23 meters high, was restored in 2005. On the facade, the portal is flanked by two columns: the left is the marquee Daniel in the lions and the prophet Habakkuk seized by the angel, the right a centaur with his lance piercing a dragon deck a smaller animal and a wreath of palm leaves follows the curve of the portal?? Inside, the nave of 26.57 m long leading to the apse decorated with columns and fluted jambs decorated with pine cones and large leaves. Beside the image of a virgin of the 12th century, mutilated the revolution, recalls the legend of Bérilon his young Viennese sculptor?? In the chorus, the statue of San Mayol, patron of the parish of Ternay was carved from a linden tree at the castle door in the 19th century Majolus of Provence, born about 910 in Valensole, near Manosque, becomes the fourth abbot of the Benedictines of Cluny in 948.
- South of the church of St. Mayol, all around the place, part of existing homes is the remains of the ancient priory of St. Peter Ternay??

- Interest 2: The town of Ternay:
- Below the church of Saint Mayol, stands the Castle Gate, built after 1529 by the aldermen of Lyon, Gateway and Amon his son Hugh, printers Haberdasher Street. Access to the interior of the castle is limited to specific periods - Heritage Days, with reservations agencies - associations linked to tourism or heritage. Restored in 1971, Castle Gate has become a place of important cultural and social events.
- Let us continue to walk inside the village, along the ancient streets, to the fountain whose waters San Mayol miraculously healed the diseases of eyes. It is said that St. Mayol who went to Rome to meet pope to step Ternay at a Benedictine Monastery, July 22 983: Here he brought forth an inexhaustible source of soil and taking water This spring, heals a blind man. - Going up in the neighborhood of the city (stairs) can be seen from the rising ramparts, a tower (private) that belonged to the walls of the old village.
- Remains yet: South of the church square, the old portal to the castle door and then Rue des Buttes Wheels and rue de la Forge porch and old wells, window of the Renaissance, the sculpted head 17th century??
- Further, repeating the main street, we go to No. 23 before a beautiful wrought iron gate that dates from 1849 and finally we reach the new town hall, formerly the headquarters of the former school built in 1908, with its frescoes painted porch and reconstituted.
- Interest 3: Heritage Green Ternay:
- Going down to the Rhone, one enters the "green heritage.
- In the north, the area of the castle Forton has become the great enclosed city park of 23 hectares (there is the castle that the pediment with the family crest with the motto "Loyalty and Justice). Developed by "friends of nature", with its 6 km of trails, benches, a picnic area and a small pond where ducks paddle?? this park is a popular place for walking family.
- You can win too, from the south, a vast panorama of the Rhone, Chassagne park known for its orientation table (which presents a map of the region and cities in concentric circles in the region, France, Europe and the world), and for his monumental sundial with a diameter of 12 meters, opened June 21, 1998??
- To the west, by hiking trails (like the path of the port which offers a magnificent view over the river) can be reached on foot or by bicycle, the sports complex park Deves Basin regattas and small pool for fishing, not far from the arena and land where the train amateur rugby, football, tennis, basketball and boules.
- Finally, beyond that, the county 36, between the bridge over the canal and bridge Vernaison, one enters the island from the roundtable on "living heritage" and rehabilitated lônes since 1990. The island of the roundtable is an area of "wilderness", a paradise for birds (cormorants and black kites, herons), fish and beavers. Its shady paths lined with plants and fed by the river invites you to walk or bike to the rediscovery of the Rhone.
Circuits:
- Circuit visiting Ternay (Cluniac Network Sites - Major Cultural Route of the Council of Europe):
- Start from the car parks near the Town Hall (parking frescoes, the town hall parking, parking at the Ecole des Pierres).
- See the council and its frescos - the porch (porch former reconstituted).
- The library opposite the town hall.
- Take the High Street towards the church square and see: At No. 23, the iron gates dating from 1849 - Rue de la Forge: Well "condominium" and private wells - Des Buttes wheel wells, old porch and exposed wheels.
- Join the town square, old court of the Priory (part of existing homes is the remains of the ancient priory of St. Peter Ternay - Fireplaces in the old Post Office and the House of the Priory).
- Visit the Romanesque church built in late 11th century (historical monument) and its cloister (arches and wells).
- Join the Castle Gate (50 m below the church).
- Visit the "Castle" (note to visit must be booked).
- Discovery of terraced gardens - View of the Rhone Valley toward Lyon. Discovery of the Gallo-Roman sarcophagus 2nd century in a recess of the lower terrace.
- Get the new road (100 m) - Join the growing St. Mayol.
- Back to the village. Discover the fountain of Saint Mayol and view the tower which belonged to the ramparts (the tower is on a private estate).
- To those who want to limit the tour: From Fountain St. Mayol down on 5-10 yards, take the stairs (left down) going through the district of the city and return to the church square and the Town Hall Square and parking.
- Circuit for those who love nature and walking:
- Go down to the roundabout and join the Grand Clos Grand Clos by the highway. Walk in the Park Grand Clos: The lower part with the "barbecue" - The Pond "duck" in the middle section - The road to discovery in the northern part and upper part. Back to the pond "ducks". Then two channels available:
- For good hikers: Back to the Grand Clos roundabout - Take the Route du Port - View over the Rhone and the tip of the island in the roundtable. Partly through the left back and explore the area's sporting Deves (sports hall, pool and fishing pond water jousts, bowls area and playground balls, soccer field, rugby field, tennis courts). After exploring the area Deves will continue the path toward Magnin De Morze. We can then either return to the City Council or for the more adventurous, continue to visit Morze and cross the street to visit Chassagne Chassagne Park (sundial, viewpoint and view overlooking the southern Rhone Valley). It will be for parking by the main streets - rue de Chassagne and De Morze.
- For walkers "means" When in the "duck pond" take the path up and return to the City by way of Montferrand (it rises high on 200 m?) And turn right on Path Crapon to find the center of the village. Taking over his car, take the street and the street Morze Chassagne. Discover and walk in the park Chassagne (sundial, viewpoint and view overlooking the Rhone Valley).
