Separated into two by the Midouze, Tarusates the city is rich in history that gets lost in the mists of time. This was the oppidum of Tarbell occupied later by the Romans. Head of a viscount, she sided with the kings of England, then became the property of Albret. On June 24, 1442, the town was liberated from the English by the King of France Charles the 7th with dolphin and a large army. Historically, many lords of this city have coveted for its strategic location on the river, an important river port until the middle of last century, but also on the transverse department. A fortress on the heights of the city with ramparts, made this place very difficult to take.

Today, the local economy is facing the timber industry with the presence of a paper mill that manufactures, from the maritime pine, pulp fluff (white paper for all sectors of hygiene).
