Proud of its past, the village of Soyons introduces visitors to the historic center with old streets, a few meters from the Rhone, and offers hikers a botanical walk, leaning tower and its view overlooking the valley at about 250 meters altitude.
This is also a journey through time that offers Soyons, revealing in his basement and its massive limestone, imprints left by our ancestors.
Indeed, the village has Soyons exceptional archaeological heritage. The archaeological site of human occupation attested from prehistory to the present day without interruption. The caves and the archaeological museum are the outstanding witnesses. So, have succeeded the Neanderthals, Cro-Magnon people Neolithic and Metal Age and Roman and medieval. The village's name comes from Soïo, the goddess worshiped by a Gallic tribe who made his capital Soyons.
On the site, you discover two prehistoric caves and concretions: the Grotto of Nero and the Fox Hole. The first monument, invites you to a trip into prehistory, while the Fox Hole plunges us into the underground world and provides access to a magnificent network of stalactites and stalagmites.
Located in the heart of the village, the museum labeled "Museum of France" presents the archaeological collections which are mostly the result of excavations carried out in and around Soyons. It traces the life of man from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

Located in the heart of Old Town, the museum offers the visitor a journey through time from prehistory to medieval times, through the presentation of objects discovered during archaeological excavations at Soyons and surroundings.
Accessible through the botanical trail, the caves of Soyons occupy the eastern side of the Greenhouse Guercy. Recent investigations have led to major discoveries, including human remains showed signs of Neanderthal décarnisation, a paleontological including bears, hyenas, lions caves ... concretions and networks.
Currently two prehistoric caves and concretions are open to the public: The Cave of Nero and the Fox Hole.

The Fox Hole provides access to a network decorated with limestone concretions. We then discover the work of seepage that shape this environment and allow him an underground wonderland of stalagmites, stalactites, draperies, columns ...
Opening the archaeological museum and caves: From April 1 to October 15: Wednesday to Sunday from 14h to 18h. In July and August: daily from 10am to 19h. Last guided tour of caves starting 1 hour before closing. Guided tours all year round for groups by appointment (groups from 10 persons).

To get to the Leaning Tower or Soyons caves, take the path Mr. Astier overlooking the city, starting from the south exit of Soyons. Along the trail, signs provide information about the surrounding vegetation, found, for example the cedar of Lebanon, Aleppo pine, the tree parakeet, buckthorn, wild orchids ... The eye is drawn to the beauty of the natural environment and beautiful views of the Rhone valley and the Vercors.
