Capital of the former Principality of Salm Salm, Senones hosted a powerful Benedictine abbey in the 7th century until shortly after the French Revolution. Among the personalities that have marked the history of the city include Dom Calmet, a Benedictine of the Enlightenment, which received Voltaire in his famous library.

Senones retains many traces of its glorious past. Many buildings reminiscent of religious history, princely and industrial city: the abbey and its grand staircase, castles, buildings from the period textiles. And summer, watch the Changing of the Guard, reminiscent of the time was Senones princely capital.
