Today one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France and the Cluniac Sites, Semur-en-Brionnais village is situated atop a rocky peak 400 meters above sea level. This geographical situation does nothing to chance. 1000 years ago the site was chosen to establish a castrum, ie a castle to defend the territory.

The first lords of Semur edify then a square Norman keep in the middle of the 10th century, the massive plan, with all the architectural features of this monument to defensive purposes. And gradually, the activity generated by the powerful lords has led to the construction of a real fortress with one side of the spur, the castle defended by two round towers in the 12th century, a second wall delimiting the square strong Lowertown reserved for peasants; the beautiful Romanesque church of Saint-Hilaire, the salt cellar where they perceived the salt tax, the chapter house, etc.. All these monuments are open to visitors.

Today, the stronghold of Semur retains all its medieval monuments and also the monuments built in the 18th century, during the revolutionary period.

• The Château Saint-Hugues:

• The oldest castle in Burgundy. Her dungeon is a rare specimen of Romanesque keep. The first 2 levels date from the mid 10th century, the last of the eleventh. • The church of Saint-Hilaire: the last Romanesque church built on the ground brionnais, the true cradle of Romanesque architecture. Built by the 9th Lord of Semur, nephew of Hugh, from 1120, St-Hilaire is directly inspired by Cluny. It is one of the most majestic Romanesque churches in South Burgundy, with its massive head, its octagonal bell tower and its magnificent carved portal.
• Around the church are built the mansions (sixteenth and eighteenth centuries) notables working for the king.
• The Chapter Room or Chapter House (XVII) met the canons ensuring the cult to the Collegiate Church of St Hilaire. The French ceiling and a fireplace retain remarkable paintings of the 17th century. The place was then used as a classroom communal grown into a beautiful showcase of Romanesque art in Brionnais.
• The salt cellar from the 17th century welcomed residents Semur to pay the salt tax, the tax on salt. Ceiling, beautiful paintings of the 17th century represent allegories.
