At 450 meters high, comfortably sheltered from the foothills of the Livradois granitic among the oldest in France, the town consists of the common Sauxillanges with forty hamlets some reaching up to 650 meters. The clay valley that extends north, following the withdrawal of the waters that drowned the Auvergne before the arrival of man, still retains traces of the many ponds that punctuated.
