TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Located on a spur of the Morvan massif, north east of it, Saulieu, capital of the Morvan Regional Park, was built at the crossroads of two Roman roads up for one of Lyon to Boulogne-sur- sea and the other to Bibracte Alesia. The activity and the reputation of the city comes directly from these lanes. Great leaders like Alexander Dumaine Bernard Loiseau and have built an international reputation and made a gastronomic Saulieu unavoidable.
  • History:
  • Formerly "Sidolocus" The city was evangelized in the 3rd century by Saint Andoche Thyrse St. Felix and traveling to Autun Alesia through Agrippa. A church, then a Benedictine abbey, was built at the location of their graves.
  • Around 590-610 foundation of a monastery at Saulieu at that time Brunhild reigned as regent for Autun in Burgundy in the name of his grandson, son.
  • In 731 the Arabs divided into several columns across the Morvan following ways Gallo-Roman. Saulieu and its abbey soon does a heap of ruins.
  • Moving to Saulieu Charlemagne 768-814, reviver of the Abbey of Saint Andoche to whom we gave a piece of vine Aloxe Corton, which since bears the prestigious name of Corton Charlemagne, one of the most white wines famous and most popular of Burgundy (the preferred Voltaire, Maupassant and JF Kennedy.). The legend says that white wine was in order not to stain the beautiful flowing beard of the emperor. The Emperor had presented to the parish of his Gospel, part world-renowned for its Byzantine ivories of the 6th century. This Gospel is preserved and a copy made by the workshops of the Louvre, is displayed at the basilica.
  • In 1119 Pope Paschal the second assisted by several archbishops and bishops went to Saulieu to consecrate the new church of St. Andoche. Andoche Thyrse and Felix are the three martyrs Morvan killed in the late second century.
  • Fief of the bishops of Autun, who bore the title of Counts of Saulieu. In 1220 Saulieu is freed, in 1356 the British burned partly Saulieu; around 1368 Saulieu surrounded by fortifications.
  • In the 15th century the city was taken by Charles d'Amboise in the name of Louis 11th, and in 1589 by Count Tavannes for Henry IV. In 1773 the plague ravaging especially Saulieu. Napoleon on his return from Elba through the Morvan and passes Saulieu. In 1978 visit of President of the Republic Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. During the years 1981-1995 President Francois Mitterrand went regularly to the table of the great chef Bernard Loiseau.
  • Saulieu protects itself: In 1225, the charter granted to postage Sédélociens by Bishop Guy Vergy Saulieu becomes a dynamic city whose population and welfare increase. The people will protect their city by building walls. In 1359, the British destroyed walls, castle and houses. From 1360, the city repairs its ramparts. Again attacked by bandits, it will increase its Fortifications by the "construction of an enclosure with walls 25 feet high and covered by a gallery with its crenellated bastions and glacis, with sixteen towers and gates with drawbridges" and will continue to develop (in April 1637, a fixed bridge is built at the end of the drawbridge door Forges). "Saulieu is truly a great fortress bristling with towers and bastions surrounded by ditches and surrounded by high walls." At center, a main street here and there hindered construction irregular runs north to south.
  • Saulieu grows: But soon the fate of her city walls, is modernizing Saulieu: Opening to traffic: Disappearance of walls, installation of the entries. What caused the loss of the fortifications that were, admittedly, the guns and weather, but also coaches. Indeed, Saulieu, stage town should develop its inputs to facilitate the passage of vehicles. From 1743, various projects are emerging, and in 1789, the gaps are filled, towers and walls have disappeared. Only the Tour d'Auxois, part since 1624 dependencies of the Ursuline convent, is spared. The door of Our Lady, built in 1437 and in very poor condition, was demolished and replaced by two pillars surmounted by vases and trophies. Who adorned the Virgin is placed in a recess shortly after the door (she is). A large plaza is at the door. The door is knocked Forges in 1792.
  • The streets are maintained, widened, paved and lighted: If from the sixteenth century found in local records for the sake of maintaining roads, it is from that of the eighteenth, obeying planning policy initiated by Colbert and continued by his successors, Saulieu, like other cities in France, improves quality of life for the sake of safety and cleanliness. It was in 1735 that the development of the Promenade Saint-Saturnin, today Jean Mace, is decided by the Community Council of Saulieu. An alignment plan follows the work done at the entrances of the city. Walks can be arranged. The lighting is also becoming a concern for the Community. In 1636, it is recommended that people to light fires and candles outside the houses but only 22 October 1730 that the city did "ask both doors Forges and Notre Dame two pieces of lumber ... to attach a slide to receive the rope up and down the lantern to be placed at each door. Plus two boxes locking which will also be placed under the said doors and places that will suit best to tighten the cord for up and down the lanterns're saying. " The lanterns, initially equipped with tallow candles were gradually replaced by oil lamps (decision of 8 May 1811). Their number is increased "for the convenience of the public and other foreigners whose assistance is increasing in this city." In 1825, the city is lit by 40 lamps hexagon with lamps and reflectors. Monge Drive will be constructed in 1810, after the city became the owner of the pen Ursuline.
  • Its location allows it to be an industrial and commercial importance at that time there were 12 fairs a year and many industries (tanneries, brickworks, breweries, clog, woodworking ...). A report of the Intendant Ferrand reports that in 1700, has only two doors Saulieu but has five suburbs in which there are more people in the city. One of these suburbs, that of Saint Saturnin, home to the parish church. The royal road passing through it is bordered by mansions and an inn that became the post office. Other suburbs are inhabited by people working longer.
  • Around Saulieu "the Plat Pays". The term flat country generally designated hamlets outside the walls. A Saulieu, it consisted of thirty. These hamlets were not a commune. By cons, they were subject to a separate collection size
  • The life of the Capital of Canton today: trade and crafts a population drain from all the neighboring districts. The Saturday morning market installed under the lime trees in the Place Monge is one of the most active Auxois-Morvan. Two annual fairs on 24 March and 25 September, the show of junk at Easter, the horse show of Burgundy in April, days in intensive May loops Morvan in June, Cajun nights in early August, the telethon and race trees in December, animate the city throughout the year as well as sports and cultural associations and their many volunteers, the municipal sports complex, library, cinema, radio ...
