Sub-prefecture, the capital district, Sartène, christened by Merimee?? The most Corsican of Corsican towns??, Honored, since May 1864, as the largest town on the island.
Built 300 meters above sea level, the city has developed from the 16th century around the medieval buildings located on the spur of Pitraghiu. On entering the Old Bridge Sartène A. Scaledda, we discover that this sector still retains a portion of a wall with a corner tower, the watch tower.
From 1520, the Genoese Pitraghiu will span the area of A and Manighedda walls of which a fortified building, the Palace of Governors, the current mayor. This 16th century house with battlements still sheltered housing Lieutenant genoa. At the base of the building the Genoese aménagèrent an arched entry, probably with a drawbridge, which commanded access to the citadel. Above the arch is the emblem of the city (a crenellated tower, surrounded by sheep and two crowned head of Moor, all in silver).
The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta contains some treasures, some of which are classified historical monuments. Part of this rich heritage is comprised of a marble statue of the Virgin and Child from the 16th century, two tables, one representing the Annunciation (seventeenth century) and the other a Mater Dolorosa framing the altar in polychrome marble imported from Italy (seventeenth century), and a set of fourteen paintings depicting the Stations of the Cross offered by the Empress Eugenie. The cross and chain set reminder that here takes place the evening of Good Friday procession of Catenacciu which symbolizes the rising of Christ at Calvary.
Sartène is classified City of Art and History and is one of the most beautiful detours of France.
The Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology Corsican: Opened in spring 2009, it presents all of the archaeological remains of Corsica. With more than 250,000 objects, the smallest arrowhead to the statue-menhir, this museum has a large reserve of archaeological objects. Most of the collections on display illustrates Corsican prehistoric cultures from the arrival of humans on the island in the Mesolithic ago 9000 years ago. The museum seeks to restore the local evolution of human societies during the Neolithic (6 000-2 500 BC. JC), the Metal Ages (from 3000 BC. JC) and by presenting the ancient stone objects , metal, pottery, jewelry, statues, menhirs, models and digital renditions of prehistoric monuments. The Convent of St. Cosmas and St. Damian: It dates from the 19th century and houses a small community of monks in Belgium. This is the place of collection?? Penitent?? making the Catenacciu during Holy Week. The church of Santa Maria Assunta: It is the guardian of the cross and chains of Catenacciu famous Good Friday procession. One can admire a rich collection consists of paintings, statues, and its altar in polychrome marble dating from the 17th century. The City Hall Sartène: Former Governors Palace Genoa, this building bears the crest carved Sartène. It contains several paintings by masters of 17th and 18th century.

In late April-early May: Carnival of Corsica Sartène. In the tradition of celebrating carnival in the past, it is the association Sarten'Allegria makes this event to its former glory. Animation, masked balls, parades of tanks here and elsewhere. This event is dedicated to both children and adults of all ages. It starts with the presentation of his majesty Carnival with many activities offered to children and is followed by a procession of various international groups present at the event and ends on the final day with a big "Corso", involving tanks made in the greatest secret by local individuals, not forgetting the evening cremation of his majesty. The "Catenacciu" - the chained Friday. The procession is led by the "great penitent" anonymous, hooded robe and red, carrying a large cross of 31 kg and dragging one of her bare feet, a heavy chain of 14 kg. He is the Way of the Cross of Christ at Golgotha, and like him, will fall 3 times. A penitent White plays the role of Simon of Cyrene and the Catenacciu to help carry the cross. Nobody knows his identity except the priest. It submits to the ordeal for the fulfillment of a vow or expiration of misconduct. Just behind them, after eight penitents dressed in black, also barefoot, symbolizing the Jews. 4 of them wear a black canopy on which Christ lies covered with a white shroud. The brotherhood of penitents Sartène frames and perform during the procession of haunting songs such as "Miserere" and "Dio mio Perdono. It is difficult to specify at what time dates the origin of this procession. It starts at 21h30 with the opening of doors of the church Santa Maria Assunta. The course very tedious and takes approximately 2 hours of 2km. At the end of the procession of penitents kneel on the court with the crowd to listen to the sermon of a preacher father. The procession ends with the entry of Catenacciu in the church where he was held immobile with other penitents, while the faithful file past the altar where he kneels.

The village of Tizzano: small fishing port, 18 km from Sartène, has developed considerably in recent years. A small marina has been built and the sandy beaches are very popular.
Lion Roccapina: Huge pink granite rock eroded by water and wind. This genuine natural sculpture marks the southern entrance to the territory of Sartenais Valinco. They say the lion watches over the Navy since the dawn of time??
The bridge on the Spina Cavaddu Rizzanese between Arbellara and Sartène. It is a 13th century Genoese bridge destroyed by floods several most recently in 1994, hence its current appearance. It is characterized by a single arch and the break marked the close in rough pavement.
The site Cauria: On this site, Funtanaccia dolmen, the largest island (3.40 mx 2.90 m) exceeds fifteen tons. This assemblage of huge slabs sleek, the beginning of the second millennium BC, it is perfectly preserved. Also on this site, Rinagghiu, a set of sixty menhirs arranged in a?? Grove?? leaning against a granite mountain. Finally, the first Stantari is an alignment of standing stones and statues-menhirs characteristics of the primitive island, they are, their iconographic expression, the richest in Corsica. Alignment Paddaghiu: Named in the vernacular?? The cemetery Turks?? With 258 menhirs, it is the most important alignment of the Mediterranean.
U Frate Others Sora: Two standing stones along the National Road 196 between Sartène and Propriano in plain Rizzanese. According to legend a monk and a nun, victim of divine punishment, there were petrified.
