TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Founded in the 9th century, the tiny town of Sancergues has a long history, and it has not lost its charm with modern developments. This pretty town of 735 inhabitants is a perfect base for exploring the region, thanks to its tranquility and historical interest.
  • Sancergues is located in the eastern department of Cher in the Central Region. Located in the Valley Vauvise, Sancergues covers an area of 15 sq. km. On the other side is the city of Saint-Martin-des-Champs. A lateral canal linking the Loire Sancergues at Chapel Montlinard, 6 km. Find Sancergues, we follow the road 151 from Bourges, eastbound.
  • The city of Sancergues was founded in the 9th century with the construction of a church by St. August, the Archbishop of Bourges. The rest of the city was formed around the church, initially under the lordship of Saint-Martin-des-Champs. Later, the city gained its independence. Although the original church no longer exists, another historic church remains in the city. The church Saint-Jacques was built in 12th and 13th centuries. Because of the length of its construction, the church is an example of architectural styles. The choir of the 12th century, is Romanesque, but the nave of the 13th century, is gothic. The steeple of Saint-Jacques, originally made of wood, was rebuilt in stone in 1894 after being destroyed by lightning. The font of Saint-Jacques is the 15th century and the church contains a painting of the Adoration of the Magi from the early 19th century. There is also a beautiful castle Sancergues, Castle Augy. Roger Martin du Gard (1881 - 1958), Nobel laureate for his work Les Thibault, visited the castle for 27 years.
  • This town, capital of Canton, is an administrative center including: kindergarten and elementary school, gym, post office, collection, police, firefighters and equipment. It also provides a medical center. The presence of shops and artisans strengthen the dynamic image of the town. The Vauvise: a dynamic economic activity! In addition to agricultural activity, there is an industrial activity with two factories in 1984 and 1998 in the artisanal zone.
  • Literature:
  • Roger Martin du Gard (1881-1958) spent 27 years at Castle Augy. He is the inspiration of his early works, and drafted the plan Thibault earned him the Nobel Prize in 1937.
  • Gouvernel Hubert (1879-1944), solicitor's clerk, poet and author of A Time Pardu, written during his leisure hours. It is a collection of poems very funny and very rich, written in dialect, which draws on the lives of his contemporaries.
  • Maurice Delafosse (1870-1926), this child of the campaign Berry has devoted his life to the study of African civilization and especially Senegal.
  • Lapautre Pauline (1868-1954), schoolteacher, spent his retirement to collect documents on local history.
  • Saint Jacques de Compostela Sancergues is a city on the road to Saint Jacques de Compostela, after whom the church of the town is called. St. Jacques was one of the first apostles, according to legend he had healed the sick in Jesus' name. He became a martyr when he was beheaded by King Herod after the crucifixion of Jesus. Eight centuries after his death, the tomb of St. Jacques has been found at Compostela. The pilgrimage to his tomb has become very popular during the Middle Ages, and remains today the most visited pilgrimage after Rome and Jerusalem.
