Located in the heart of the Regional Natural Park of Cotentin and Bessin and the territory of the Plain, Sainte Mere Eglise has a rich historical past and its glorious ancient farming traditions.
Sainte Mere Eglise, the first town liberated on the morning of June 6, 1944, pays tribute to its liberators. One of them, John Steele, has become popular in spite of himself, remaining hung in the steeple of the church. Shortly after he was taken prisoner by a German soldier who wins and fortunately John Steele manages to escape. He returned to the town of Sainte Mere Eglise several times, and died May 16, 1969.
Sainte Mere Eglise commemorates the liberation.
