Located on the borders of Champagne and the edge of the Argonne Forest, St. Ménehould is a picturesque town that was born Dom Perignon, "the inventor of champagne.
The lower town was rebuilt in the early 18th century after a terrible fire, around the hill known as "the castle", which has kept a medieval aspect with its houses with wood sides.
The place where stands the City Hall has a fine collection of buildings alternating brick and stone placed by the historical monuments. This "champagne unit" is present on many mansions along the streets.
The city was often placed in the heart of the story.
At the site of the current police station, Drouet, the postmaster, Louis recognized 16th while trying to flee the country, June 21, 1791.
At the nearby site of Valmy, Prussian and French fought September 20, 1792. General Kellermann, under the command of Dumouriez commanded the center of the French Army and occupied the plateau near the mill.
The city and its surroundings were the scene of battles during the First World War.
The specialty is the "pig's foot in the Holy Ménehould" of which there are a brotherhood. The recipe is born, they say, in the kitchens of the Hotel de Metz (now deceased). The legend attributes it to the carelessness of a cook who had forgotten on the stove a pot feet for over a long night. He discovered the morning that the feet were even better and that the bones showed a soft tasty.
