Built on a hillside on the banks of the Vienne, Saint-Victurnien is a peaceful city that has been maintaining and enhancing the evidence of his past.
The common Saint-Victurnien owes its name to a hermit who, according to legend, lived in the forest that covered the banks of the Vienne, in the 5th century in this valley called dark. No written tradition only tells the life and death of the hermit. Its existence is mentioned for the first time in the tenth power by the religious authorities but his identity has never been established. We know only that he had also run. If one refers to the disputes existing at that time in Britain (the names have been used in Britain until later), it is reasonable to think that he came to get some peace in the valley and very soon it adopts a Latin name: Victorinus, the patois of Languedoc was pronounced "Vartunio. The hermit died near the present fountain next to the crossing (Street Ballet). The tombs of hermits are quickly becoming the place for pilgrimages. Legend has it that the "Vartunio" has made cures. The pilgrims come in great numbers. To make travel safe, patients were grouped, and pilgrimages arise. The "dark valley" offers the pilgrims came for healing prayer and a sarcophagus for a fountain drink. So for them to get away during their stay, the cottages are born early, some used as an inn. The material needs are assured, think about the spiritual, a small wooden church was born, near the tomb. Over time, and braving the storms, the village moves, the woods gradually destroyed, are replaced with grass planted on the heights. An ancient road connecting Limoges to Saint-Junien, along the banks of the Vienne, trails link together the small communities that form slowly from the church. The latter was enlarged in the 13th and 14th centuries
Thus was born the village will continue to grow over the centuries. It is now a rich heritage that we invite you to discover by browsing the beautiful town.
Saint-Victurnien is also part of the 13 localities ostentatious department. Every seven years the saint's relics are carried in procession through the village decorated. The next Ostensions take place in 2016.
Saint-Victurnien is now public services: post office, railway station, a bus service, a library, a primary school and kindergarten, nursery school died, a recreation center, a music school integrated the community of municipalities, as well as numerous shops, crafts, health professionals, accommodation, and 24 different associations ...
