Saint-Venant is a French commune, located in the department of Pas-de-Calais and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

This is a village situated at the confluence of the Lys and Guarbecque Creek.

Saint-Venant Artois is in Flemish.

Once fortified, it is also a manor built in the county in 1655.

The village was formerly called Papinghem or "Pappingheham" (about 1075), the origin of the name came from "papo" and the suffix "inghem" meant the area papo.

The village was finally annexed to France with the Treaty of Utrecht (1713).

Saint-Venant was chief town of the district during the Revolution (1790-1802)

The executions Saint-Venant were among the most deadly during the Revolution.

Saint-Venant becomes Fort Verde during the Revolution. Revolutionary indeed systematically changed the names of common starting with "Saint" or "Santa" for the sake of de-Christianization and rechristened it wished to punish cities.

Its inhabitants are called the Saint-Venant.
