Saint-Savin on Gartempe is located in the Poitou-Charentes, on the edge of Berry, in the department of Vienne, 45 km east of Poitiers.

Charlemagne is credited with the founding of St Saviour who built a monastery. The development of Saint-Savin revolved around its abbey.

A Saint-Savin on Gartempe was born in 1827, Leon Edoux, inventor of the elevator.

• Saint-Savin on Gartempe is best known for its abbey church which the vault of the nave, the porch, the gallery and the crypt are covered with Romanesque murals are unique in Europe. The abbey church is a listed monument since 1870 and is listed as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1983. Museum is a device installed in the former monks' cells, located in the floor of the convent of the 17th century.
