Founded 500 years BC, the rich history of the city is still visible. Called first Glanum, it was then Hellenized Roman city. Destroyed during the barbarian invasions, it was rebuilt 1 km north. In the Middle Ages, Saint-Remy prospered and is endowed with ramparts and then became a city rich with many beautiful mansions in Renaissance who gave birth to Nostradamus. It was mainly directed towards agriculture and the 19th century industrial crops led to the prosperity of many middle-class families of farmers merchants. Soon, the city attracted artists, writers and musicians. Vincent van Gogh, who lived there from May 1889 to May 1890, attracted by the light and landscapes are painted almost 150 paintings. Since those days, the charm of Saint-Remy has ceased to operate.

It produces many gourmet products such as candied fruits and olive oil renowned. Several wineries name "Coteau des Baux" in organic cultivation.
