Under the old regime, before 1789, the parish of Saint-Nicolas was shared between the command of Tolvon which included the present town and the command of Hautefort. This division was a consequence of the fact that the decree of Hautefort was a possession of the Lords of Clermont, where they built the castle Hautefort.
In the Middle Ages, Hautefort possession of the Counts of Clermont, combined with Dolphins, was therefore Dauphinois, while the town of Saint-Nicolas depended on the Counts of Savoy. We understand perfectly that Montclar castle belonging to the Counts of Savoy, was erected between the castles of Clermont and Hautefort possessions of the Counts of Clermont.
The village is still largely agricultural.
People linked to the town: Morand Jouffrey family, descendants of Jean-Antoine Morand Jouffrey, architect, painter, urban planner, which works effectively in Lyon (1727-1794), he is the true creator of the neighborhood Brotteaux Lyon (6th district), a bridge and a car park still bears his name. His son Antoine Morand Jouffrey was appointed in 1785, Attorney General King's Office Finance Lyons and his little son, Aimé Jean-Jacques Morand Jouffrey, First President of Royal Court of Grenoble in 1829. Jacques Morand Jouffrey, last Earl of Hautefort (1922-1999). The Morand Jouffrey will largely work for many inhabitants of the town. Known as real benefactors, they remain in the memories of the inhabitants of Saint-Nicolas, but also hamlets.
SIGHTSEEING
Hautefort Castle, built at the foot of the hamlet of Hautefort, dominates the town and the church of St. Nicolas. They are the lords of Clermont who established what was at the beginning of the 15th century fortress. It has been profoundly altered in the 17th and 18th century by Antoine de Gumina, Count Hautefort. The last count of Hautefort Jacques Morand Jouffrey, separates from the field in 1982 by sharing it. Today the castle is divided into various apartments.
