Town Presentation

Saint-Michel in Thiérache small town of 3,500 inhabitants, is located in the northeastern department of Aisne, on the border of Belgium and the Ardennes, near the Northern Department. It includes the hamlets Montorieux, Blissy, valleys and the Champ-de-l'Etry. Its territory, which covers 4220 hectares, is one of the most common large department.

The forest, which occupies more than half of its area is famous for its communication channels (including the route Charlemagne), by which we easily reached the Franco-Belgian border, the first Belgian village, Macquenoise, is not that seven miles from the center Saint-Michel.

An agricultural and forestry in the early 19th century, Saint-Michel owes its growth to its industrial prosperity. The Industrial Development Saint-Michel took its source in the second half of the 19th century. This was based mainly on the extension Foundries Sougland created in 1543.

Today, economic activity revolves around three major industries: automotive, construction industry and metallurgical industry.

Cultural activities are also the rhythm of local life. These relate to two institutions:

The abbey, ancient Benedictine abbey of the twelfth, thirteenth, fifteenth, 17th and 18th centuries, pearl Thiérache you strike by its beauty and majesty. In the former farm buildings of the abbey is the Museum of Rural Life and Forestry where treaties are old crafts of yesteryear who have become known for Thiérache.

  • Saint-Michel Abbey, founded in the 10th century, is particularly interesting because it is Benedictine.   • Thiérache is a natural area located primarily in the northeastern department of Aisne, extending a little north in the Northern Department, and is in the department of Ardennes and Belgium.   • Culture of wicker, encouraged quality handicrafts (basketry fine Origny-in-Thiérache) which made the reputation of the region in the early 19th century.
