An important commander belonging to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem existed there since before 1179. Its commander was the lord of Saint-Maulvis and exercised "all righteousness" of 22 villages.

During the Hundred Years War, the village was totally burned (only the fortress with the men at arms in 1350 was not destroyed) and remained uninhabited for 16 years. Consequently, revenues from the commander found it so small that the Grand Prior of France, Guillaume de Mailloc, convoked a general chapter in Paris in 1357.
