Saint-Martory was inhabited since prehistoric times. The caves of Tourasse, Azilian, and that the shelter Montconfort, the Reindeer Age, testifies. The village was besieged in 72 BC C. by Pompey. At these times, the village was called Calagurris. In the 11th century. and the 18th century., the city is under the control of the lords of Montpezat and counts of Comminges. In 1790, the village became capital of the canton and in 1794 took the name of Mountain Garonne. In the mid-19th century., Thanks to the Garonne, Saint-Martory experienced a boom period with the business paper. Its present name comes from a saint called "Martiry".
SIGHTSEEING
In the village, on the banks of the Garonne, you will find the church dating from the twelfth, 14th and 17th century. It seems that the early church was devastated in the 12th century. and rebuilt in 1397 by the chapter of Saint-Bertrand. Its bell tower has two towers. Romanesque gate is decorated with eight arches resting on columns with capitals. It comes from the abbey of Bonnefont (Proupiary).
On the heights of Saint-Martory (Mancioux road), you will see the first castle of the family of Montpezat dating from the 11th century., One of the oldest families of Comminges. By the late Middle Ages, the family settled in the plains and built the castle situated on the Garonne. You can see it from the Place Nationale.
You will cross the Garonne on the three-arched bridge. It was built between 1724-1727 has built a gate constituting the defenses of the ancient city.
