Historical capital of the island of Ré, Saint-Martin-de-Ré is now a village charm. Organized around the harbor, protected by ramparts, is a resort and promenade must for all visitors to the island of Ré.
Here, narrow streets and alleys contain many heritage treasures rétais: House of timbered Vinatieri (sixteenth century), the Hotel de Clerjotte Renaissance or the citadel, whose patrons prisoners bound for prison.

- Following the terrible siege by the English in 1627, Vauban, commissioned by King Louis XIV, inspects the island of Ré in 1674. A few years later, in 1681, he published, from plans made by Engineer Ferry, the "instructions on the fortifications of St. Martin.
- The walls of fortification has practically not been changed until today. It forms a semicircle resting on the sea front and is 14 km from the ramparts. Pierced only two doors, it is composed of 5 bastions and half-moons and includes the citadel itself accessible through a single door and has its own port for refueling.
- As part of the fortifications, its primary function, from the 17th century, was to house the garrison stationed on the island of Ré until the mid 18th century. Since 1860, she received the convicts. But from 1873 she became the unique gathering of all the convicts of France. On account of some 600 prisoners at each departure from the current dock Georges Clemenceau, thousands of convicts were on board the floating hulks flights to Guyana or New Caledonia. Among them, some famous prisoners: Butterfly Dreyfus, Seznec ... The last departure of convicts held in 1938.
- Today, this historic building is a home office in which about 460 prisoners are common criminals. If the visit is of course impossible to walk through the castle can admire the Royal Doors and small harbor refueling.
- Protected by walls and a dike at the entrance, consists of a haven grounding and a basin in streams controlled by a lock. In the village which remains the key element, it contains effective fishing boats and yachts and is a popular stop for boaters who appreciate the proximity of different services and nightlife.
- Manager 260 sites a year including 52 reserved for transient boaters, the Port Office offers all services needed to facilitate a stop in Saint Martin (shower, laundry, handicapped spaces and babies, technical services for repair and fascia, weather ...).
- Every year, many events are offered by the Yacht Club de Saint-Martin.

- Beach and relaxation for all ages:
- True mascots of the island of Ré, asses in panties children walk in Park Barbette, along the ramparts. They were well dressed in homage to their elders who once helped transport the salt and wine. Pipes protected them from insect bites and grass cutting. Every afternoon during the holidays, they expect children in the park Barbette for a quiet ride.
- Very close, mini-golf and rides round out the variety of entertainment for younger children. And just behind the ramparts, the beach at Target looks small and large for most wonderful moments of relaxation with your family.
