Saint-Marcellin-en-Forez was placed at the crossroads of pathways. Indeed, the village is located on ancient lines of communication between Burgundy and Velay on the highway Forez from Montbrison and direction known only bridge over the south of the Loire, which was located in Saint-Rambert. The origins of the city back to the Middle Ages. The earliest written reference can be traced back to the 10th century, specifically in 984, but a treasure of about five hundred coins of the 4th century (discovered in 1884) shows an even more ancient occupation site. The church is mentioned in 1225 and the system of fortifications in 1286. The town is indeed surrounded by a double ring of ramparts of the 13th century and 15th century, giving it a massive appearance. A stronghold of the earls of Drill, complete with a castle protected the double ring encircling the town, Saint-Marcellin retains the design of fortifications, on which are backed structures. This plan is consistent with the representation that made William Revel in his armorial in 1450. The ancient village crowned by a high tower was a defensive all withstood many assaults. Saint-Marcellin seems to have consistently been among the area counts of Forez. It then passed to the dukes of Bourbon, was then attached with Forez the kingdom of France without ever having been dismembered suzerainty. During the Middle Ages, Saint Marcellin was an important stronghold, as evidenced by the many mansions that you can discover by browsing its picturesque streets.
