TOWN PRESENTATION

Saint-Léons is a town in the Midi-Pyrenees department of Aveyron, 20 km north west of Millau. Its territory is included in full in the Regional Natural Park of Grands Causses. This is the Bois du Four arises that the Muse, a river which flows through this charming medieval village. The Muse is a natural border between the primary land and land Lévézou Triassic Causse Rouge where abuts the Millau Viaduct.

Saint-Léons was founded in the late 5th century by St. Leontius, bishop of Bordeaux, who retired with a few disciples in this corner so wild Lévézou. He founded a monastery and died there. A charter of Saint Victor of Marseilles in 874 indicates a sanctuary Nobiliacum. First there was an abbey, then a fortified village around the abbey. The castle overlooking this small town was built around 1445. In 1560, the Prior of Combret Guyon, Guyon successor of Castelpers, converted to Protestantism, he drove the monks from their cells and transformed into a stronghold Saint-Léons, he put a garrison. In 1580, Saint-Léons was besieged and taken by the Catholic monastery and the town was largely destroyed.
