TOWN PRESENTATION

Small town with the villages of Saint Jean d'Alcas and St. Paul of Fonts.

Saint-Jean d'Alcas is located below the vast plateau of Larzac, five miles from Roquefort-sur-Soulzon.

St. Paul of the Fonts is home to a multitude of flowers and home to many farms.

Since prehistoric times, men occupied the land known to be among the richest in South-Aveyron. Periods of prosperity there are a succession through time, leaving in legacy numerous archaeological remains and monuments.

The town now has 208 inhabitants and is situated 600 meters above sea level.


SIGHTSEEING
  • St. John of Alcas:
  • It is the generosity of an abbess of the Cistercian abbey nearby Nonenque, who owned the place, we must build this marvel of fortification. Meanwhile, the Grand Prior of Saint-Gilles also authorized the fortification of places dependent Commandery near Sainte-Eulalie-de-Cernon.

  • Start your day enjoying the magnificent panorama that offers circus St. Paul of Fonts! From this height, you can enjoy the breathtaking view of Fort Saint-Jean d'Alcas, Cistercian gem that deserves a stop on your itinerary. The walled enclosure of a smooth consistency, served as a refuge for peasants and their livestock in an emergency. After a visit of about 1 hour, keep your day towards Viala-du-Pas-de-Jaux.
  • By the D559 up Tournemire and turn right by the D93 direction Viala-du-Pas-de-Jaux. On the road you can see on board a Lavogne, fed naturally designed to collect rainwater to water the flocks of "muttons" (sheep).
  • Le Viala du Pas-de-Jaux, and his monumental tower will welcome you to discover a break. Vivid illustration of the role of agropastoral plateau Larzac Tower Viala-du-Pas-de-Jaux was built in the 15th century, next to the ancient buildings of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, to secure the inhabitants, their property and their animals. Head towards Sainte-Eulalie-de-Cernon.
  • For the D23 direction Hospitalet Larzac Cougouille to peak and then return to the fork and take the D561 to Sainte-Eulalie-de-Cernon. Along the way, the magnificent panorama of the Larzac since the peak Cougouille worth a detour. Leave your car and walk down a few minutes to reach the summit. Turn around and go to the Templar Commandery of Saint-Eulalie-de-Cernon best preserved of France. In his past medieval walled room, Sainte-Eulalie has retained most of its walls, towers, its gates and its church. On the square, opposite the Commandery, you can cool around the shaded fountain erected in the 17th century and discover the beautiful Romanesque church party.
