Saint-Jean-d'Angély: adorable little town with 8300 inhabitants and its rich heritage (abbey royal towers of the abbey, big clock, alderman, mansions ...), accompanied by the gentle shores of the Boutonne (walk along the Boutonne and its gardens, footpaths and cycling, fishing ...), situated in the heart of the Pays des Vals de Saintonge Charente Maritime: 40 minutes from the beach, 25 minutes from Saintes and Cognac, 35 minutes from Niort , 50 minutes from La Rochelle ...

The town, built on the site of a Roman villa on the shores of the Boutonne was an important step on the Camino de Santiago (hence the construction of a royal abbey of Aquitaine by Pepin to receive the head of St. Jean-Baptiste).

• Royal Abbey: The abbey was founded in 817 by Pepin of Aquitaine to receive the head of John the Baptist. Many times looted and devastated by the Vikings in the 9th century by the English during the Hundred Years War and then by the Protestants during the Wars of Religion, the abbey was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries. It shows all the buildings in which lived the Benedictine monks: guest room, living room of the abbot, refectory, cells ...
• The two towers of the abbey: Construction of the unfinished abbey begun in 1741 by the Monks. The work dragged on for lack of money and the Revolution put an end to. From the towers, magnificent panorama of the city and its region. Historical panels that happy St. Jean d'Angely and the legend of the Monk Felix.
• Clock Tower: Built on the site of an ancient gate of the ramparts of the 12th century belfry of the aldermen, rebuilt around 1406, containing the sin (the bell) that punctuates the city life. The tower symbolized the communal liberties granted to the city in 1199 by a common charter. Traces of many impacts, memory seats that the city had to endure.
• Saint-Jean-d'Angély Museum: It contains the memories evoking shipments Citroën: first car crossing the Sahara (1922), "Cruise Black" left by Louis Audouin-Dubreuil, Angérien of origne, one of two expedition leaders. Among many African objects is the "Silver Crescent" the first car that crossed the Sahara in 1922. We also discover collections of decorative arts, religious carvings, bladed weapons and firearms European regional furniture.
