Saint-Jean-d'Angély: lovely little town with 8300 inhabitants and its rich heritage (abbey royal towers of the abbey, big clock, alderman, mansions ...), accompanied by the gentle shores of the Boutonne (walk along the Boutonne and its gardens, footpaths and cycling, fishing ...), situated in the heart of the Pays des Vals de Saintonge Charente Maritime: 40 minutes from the beach, 25 minutes from Saintes and Cognac, 35 minutes from Niort , 50 minutes from La Rochelle ...

The city, built on the site of a Roman villa on the shores of the button was a milestone on the road to Santiago (where construction of a royal Abbey by Pepin of Aquitaine to receive the Head of St. Jean-Baptiste).


Sightseeing

  • Royal Abbey:
  • The abbey was founded in 817 by Pepin of Aquitaine to receive the Head of Saint John the Baptist. Many times looted and devastated by the Vikings in the 9th century by the English during the Hundred Years War and then by the Protestants during the Wars of Religion, the abbey was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries.
  • It shows all the buildings which housed Benedictine monks: common room, living room of the abbot, refectory, cells ...
  • The 2 towers of the abbey:
  • Construction of the unfinished abbey begun in 1741 by the monks. The work dragged on for lack of money then the revolution will put an end.
  • From the towers, magnificent panorama of the city and its region.
  • Panels historical content Saint Jean d'Angely and the legend of the Monk Felix.
  • Clock Tower: Built on the site of an ancient gate of the ramparts of the 12th century belfry of the aldermen, rebuilt about 1406, containing the sin (the bell) which set the rhythm of city life. The tower symbolized the communal liberties granted to the city in 1199 by a charter municipality. Traces of many impacts, memory seats that the city had to endure.
  • The museum of the Franciscans: it contains the memories evoking shipments Citroën: 1st crossing the Sahara in a car (1922), "Cruise Black" bequeathed by Louis Audouin-Dubreuil, Angérien of origne, one of 2 counts of shipping. Among many African objects is the "Silver Crescent" the 1st car that crossed the Sahara in 1922. It also discovered collections of decorative arts, religious carvings, bladed weapons and firearms European regional furniture.
  • Aquatic Center Atlantys: Open 7 / 7. Ponds Recreation - Sports pools, fitness area, 54 meters waterslide, sauna, steam bath, whirlpools, wading pool, river and jet massage, diving, sun loungers and terrace.
  • Recreation Area: the edge of buttons, it offers walkers, family and the sports site with green tables picnic, its playgrounds along the Boutonne (football, basketball, volleyball, track and roller skating, children's pool with lifeguard (summer), fishing, playground for children, pedal boats, kayaking, mini golf).


Events and celebrations

  • Market: Wednesday and Saturday morning.
  • Monthly Fair: 3rd Saturday of the month.
  • Motocross: Tests of France championships and the World (spring and fall).
  • Abbey Theater: theater festival in the courtyard of the abbey Angérien Royale. Every summer for 10 days, theater troupes are major sponsors of the heritage that will showcase the beautiful setting of the royal abbey.
  • Scenes of Gardens: performances spread over 10 days between July and August. Each day, gardens mansions, mansions and castles, usually inaccessible, open and offer their unique environment for artists of diverse backgrounds for various performances: French songs, opera, music, poetry, theater , storytelling, clowns ...
  • The Déamfabulations: 4 dates in July - 4 August dates. Visit-night show in the streets of central Saint-Jean-d'Angély. "The Déamfabulations" take the audience shifted in the wake of local history at the crossroads of the historical truth and fantasy, during visits 8-night shows, spiced with humor and surprises!
