TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Presentation of the historic town:
  • Saint-Fulgent-des-Ormes is an ancient small town of Orne in the outer and Saosnois perch. Frogent, bishop of Sees in 752, was originally the name of the parish. He added, about 1830, the name of the River des Ormes including alluvial valley, facing the Saosnois, the common boundary to the west. Fertile land was favorable for growing hemp. Furnaces accompanying some hemp farm testify to this activity, which lasted until about 1960.
  • East, the territory abuts against the slope of the hills of the Perche. The highlight of the town there are: 120 m near the "Vines". A thick layer of clay is the basis for this relief cuesta. It served to fuel the tile du Tertre which the oven to three lanes heating gave his last brick in 1955.
  • St. Fulgent had only one flour mill: Mill Bishop, who died today. In 1686 we said "unemployment in recent years" and is sold in the year 1791 as a national asset. He recalled with the "Logis" of the town, the memory of this land that "from ancient times" to the bishopric of Sees.
  • Population: 164 inhabitants in 2006. In 2008 the City Council stopped the names of people: the Ulmofrogentins.
  • Surface: 832 ha

SIGHTSEEING
  • The Church of St. Fulgent:
  • A * if male was planted near the entrance of the church, once surrounded the cemetery. Its double trunk supports a canopy masking a portion of the building. This tree burial is the only vegetable matter in crossing the town whose name refers to another species, now rare: the elm.
  • You can access the church through a porch (heavily restored) recalling the original Romanesque building, confirmed by the narrow and high semicircular bay above it. During the Renaissance, the nave was extended by two chapels lit windows flamboyant tracery. The flat bed was pierced by three bays forming arch "triplet", the 13th century, probably sealed the early 18th century during installation of the high altar.
  • In the gable wall of the chapel south spur between a corner and a Gothic window, a sundial was painted in 1991 at the site of an old one.
  • In the chorus altar (early 18th century - MH Cl) with medium-relief emblazoned ** Clay, "The Transfiguration, after Raphael; gilded wooden statues of St. Godegrand and Saint Opportune .
  • * Yew is dioecious: feet foot female and male grow separately. Only female flowers give rise to arils, a kind of fleshy red berry containing a single seed, toxic.
  • ** Offered by the Abbess of Saint-Julien du Pré, Le Mans, Catherine d'Aumont, who died in 1708, who bore for arms: silver a chevron gules, accompanied by seven blackbirds just four chief 2 and 2, three points 1 and 2.
  • Furnaces hemp
  • Land of the town, rich and deep, were conducive to the cultivation of hemp. Its production, attested in the leases from the 13th century, shows the importance given to this plant as it "is prepared and converted into yarn, and this thread, we make paintings. Still frequent in the vicinity of farms, kilns hemp are the last witnesses of a former agricultural activity which lasted until about 1960. Textile plant for exhausting the soil, hemp also required many tillage. In early September, after being lifted by hand, by handfuls of hemp boots were made a week soak in a pool (rouisson) or stream to facilitate the separation of fibers from the bark. Then came a first drying air, "in chapels" on the stubble. The boots were then steamed in ovens. The more * often cylindrical, covered with a conical roof tiles in the shell, they were built mostly in the second half of the 19th century **.
  • Isolated, remote farm buildings or housing for fear of fire, the oven had two levels. In the upper part is the boots piled vertically on top of a metal floor slatted. Below, the heating chamber, accessed by a door half-buried, was fueled by a "basket" burning coke. Drying between 50 ° and 60 °, lasted 24 hours. Once dry, hemp was crushed with a pitch hand or mechanical grinder (jam) to separate the woody parts (boon) in tow. Hemp "Teil" was reserved for ropes and coarse cloth, hemp "combed" used in the manufacture of finer fabrics, called "stranded wire", and the manufacture of twine.
  • * There are another 15 ovens hemp in the commune of Saint-Fulgent; the latter are constructed of square.
  • ** Previously, hemp was dried in ovens or furnaces dug into an embankment.
  • A more complete history of the village appears in a monograph published in 1987 by the Friends of Perch.
