SIGHTSEEING
Saint-Florentin has a remarkable heritage, true development potential. Saint-Florentin wants friendly and enterprising in the image of the Tourist Office which encourages visitors to stop to discover the riches Florentin, and offers many activities, events and outings.
The walk begins in the suburb, in a picturesque area wedged between two branches of river. Le Jardin de l'Octroi, fully refurbished in 2008, invites the visitor to relax. Haven of peace, meeting place, walks, refuge of lovers paradise for children, garden seduced by its harmonious decor and facilities. In addition to a courtyard, a recreation area and a kiosk, the Garden of Grant has a green theater, dubbed "Léo Ferré" in tribute to the artist who gave his final concert, open-air stage dedicated to cultural activities.
This green lung, is also the gateway to the canal bridge the architectural style unique to Vauban. This is actually a five-arched aqueduct allows the channel to span the Armance Burgundy, one of the few works of this type seen over the water. Since this strong element of the landscape and from the Burgundy Canal, the curious discover Saint-Florentin in a different light. City unveils its charm then, a picturesque city clinging to the side of a hill, green lung, where peace reigns. To enjoy the beauty of the place, visitors can stroll by bike on the towpath, or make a cruise boat.
So, inevitably, it will be attracted to the port. Once the backbone of the economy Florentin, instead of including trade in timber port is now Saint-Florentin marina, the starting point on the waterways of the region. A must when you live outside of time.
The picturesque city Saint-Florentin has put its assets by value. The tour begins in downtown Place des Fontaines. At the center, built on the model of the one destroyed in 1859, stands a bronze fountain Dragons. Inspired by Gothic and Renaissance, it is remarkable for its fine sculptures. Under Christ and the Virgin, the statues of St Beatus, Saint Barbara, Saint Martin and Saint Florentin are housed in kennels, not to mention Adam and Eve.
Other historical heritage of the town: the granary. Built under Louis Philippe, the corn market at the time was the location of commercial transactions. Upon the sounding of the bell, business was rife in the building made of stone pillars, doors open by ten for the entry of horse carriages. The hall has now become covered market place of rendezvous for gardeners and the public on Mondays and Saturday mornings during the two weekly markets Florentin.
Going through the streets of "old St. Flo, one quickly discovers the tower of the Bells, one vestige of the fortifications of the 17th century. Formerly, the town was indeed surrounded by ramparts pierced by doors, including that of Saint-Florentin, west, which consisted of two tall towers and crenellated. In total, six rounds were used to defend the city from which only the tower remains of the Bells. A roof peak, it is home to four municipal bells ringing the hour, masses and religious events. These were put there because the church tower, which remained unfinished, could not support their weight.
At the top of the hill, finally, you can not miss the Priory. Built from the 9th century, it was at its origin, a convent of canons and Hospitallers before being assigned to the 11th century to the Abbot of Saint-Germain d'Auxerre. Today beautiful gazebo, overlooking the rooftops and the suburb of Aval. Admire the view over the valley and the dream that inspired the bands bandstand!
An exceptional monument: Gothic and Renaissance church of Saint-Florentin strikes by its imposing dimensions, similar to that of a cathedral. It was built in parts, gradually, on the foundations of the previous building, from the early 16th century. The first work done quickly (chorus), likely interrupted by the troubles of the wars of religion, were not resumed until early 17th century, and remained unfinished for lack of resources, depriving the building of the nave. The interior of the building contains art treasures of the sixteenth. The bas-reliefs, stained glass, statuary and the rood screen give the church a wealth of art and important heritage. The ornamentation reflects indeed the expertise of the School Trojan: the exceptional set of 24 stained remarkably colorful surprises with its fine details and the harmony of its brilliant colors. Note especially the Apocalypse, the Immaculate Conception or the Creation of the World. The grace and splendor of the church Florentin earned him to be classified a historical monument in 1842. Although more than an element of historical and architectural Saint-Florentin, the church is also one of the major components of the local culture. Many musical events will take place: concerts of the Harmonie Municipale, School of Music, choirs Florentin ... Most importantly, every summer, the association points Organ presents its festival. So renowned international musicians enliven the organ, jewel of the 16th century, the pride of Florentin. The monument is now opening its doors to the public year round. Those wishing to explore the building must obtain the key to the Tourist Office or follow the Summer guide to find places in a different light.
The museum Florentin: The idea was born there over 14 years to restore its credentials to the former County Museum. In the heart of Saint-Flo, the museum Florentin was excellently well received by the population of the city and its environs. This "new" cultural institution has indeed been seen as an asset for the town. She is a treasure of memories for the oldest, a great way for youth to discover the local history and a major tourist attraction. With the support of the Friends of the Museum in Florentin, but also the many donations and private loans, the museum has four rooms today. The first room plunges the visitor into the past and Saint-Florentin Avrolles, through models, objects or remains from the Gallo-Roman oppidum of Mont Avrollot. The second room to discover an authentic Florentin, through the old professions and life market, its agriculture including the wine business, an important 19th century. Fire and Florentin caps are featured in the third room. Since 2010, a fourth welcomes among others, a collection of coats of arms of lords, merchants, priests and officers of the neighboring villages of the commune Florentin. And many more discoveries await you in this new space ... that should stop expanding, many items are still carefully preserved in the reserves, lack of space. A promising future for this pillar of culture Florentin.
Avrolles, joint involved: Located just a few miles west of Saint-Florentin, Avrolles is marked by the site of Mount Avrollot which was occupied by men since ancient times (maybe 2 or 3000 years BC). Natural defensive site, this oppidum spur-type bar has raised a rampart and expanded (8 m wide), which explains the importance of remnant present. At the foot of the mountain, a large church (XVI century) and its fortified tower, the height of the nave with current outstanding recalls the former importance of this ancient town. With a peculiarity: the bell tower is separated from the nave by an avenue of lime trees of 20 m.
