Located 3 miles from Condé-sur-Noireau and 16 km from Thury-Harcourt. Formerly it was part of the Canton of Condé-sur-Noireau it is today that of Thury-Harcourt but it is nevertheless part of Condé Intercom.

The name comes from Saint Denis, who was born in Italy where he was ordained priest and bishop. "Mother" comes from the Latin Mercatum which means "market". The story goes that the lord of St. Denis had a right to fair, which took place the day we celebrated the saint. He would have played fair and lost against the lord of Beaumanoir in Montilly-sur-Noireau. Every year a fair is held in Montilly-sur-Noireau the feast of St. Denis on October 9. The people are Mérois.
