TOWN PRESENTATION

Saint-Avit-Sénieur is located in southwestern Dordogne, Perigord limit in Purple and Black Perigord. Whether between Bergerac and Sarlat country.

Traces of human presence dating from the Acheulean (300,000 years BC-C) were found to Saint-Avit-Sénieur. Towards the end of the 5th century, legend qu'Avitus converted to Catholicism became a hermit. He performs miracles, and later his shrine became a place of pilgrimage especially for walkers of St. Jacques de Compostela. The church built in the 12th century was the subject of fires, looting, during the Hundred Years War. The walls collapsed then served a career in the construction of homes of people around.

Intense agricultural activity was carried out on the town. Currently, small farms tend to disappear and be replaced by GAEC larger and more viable for operators.

In December 2010, the town was closed (with Monpazier Cadouin Biron) Major site in Aquitaine. The theme is "The Middle Ages opens doors." Work to beautify the town should proceed on a schedule of 3 years.

SIGHTSEEING

The abbey church of Saint-Avit-Sénieur was ranked in 1998 as World Heritage by UNESCO under the road to St Jacques de Compostela. Medieval frescoes are to be discovered.

Free tours can be organized by volunteers from the Friends of Saint-Avit-Sénieur Association, which also offer summer two tours Torch (contact on the website of the association).

Many tobacco barns still in use, evidence of a strong agricultural activity of the past.

The abbey and medieval frescoes, its presbytery, its famous characters including Professor Leo Testut, and the Rector Jean Capelle, father colleges.

EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS

The celebration of rural traditions that has always held the second Sunday in August in odd years.

In the summer, and even in other seasons, meals are organized by associations of the village (13 associations around 420 inhabitants). These famous meal where you are asked to bring your covered dish and drink ... otherwise no meals!

Fall, odd years, a great festival with a display of pumpkins.

In winter, the second Sunday in December, the feast of the nose, with demonstration Breakout (truffle hunting), meals with truffles, and sale of black truffles.

During the years jacquaires (in 2010 and 2021, when on July 25, feast of St. Jacques, is a Sunday), many events are held in the Dordogne and Saint-Avit-Sénieur.

ATTRACTIONS, LEISURES AND ACTIVITES AROUND

Cadouin, Molière, Montferrand du Perigord, Monpazier, Domme, Belvès, Sarlat, Bergerac, Limeuil Issigeac ... are many villages or towns to visit.

A rich religious heritage and medieval, with small villages unrecognized as Orliac, Labouquerie, Sainte-Croix-de-Beaumont.

Many tours are offered: Bastide in the Land of mushroom and chestnut trees, vineyards and walled towns, abbeys and fortified towns, mills, cingles abbey.
